Glory at White Hart Lane?

John Payne wants it all. No half measures, no resting, no shuffling. Seize each moment, seize each opportunity. To dare is to do.

Almost a whole year ago Spurs beat Palace 3-1 at Selhurst Park with Dele Alli scoring one of the most breath-taking goals of the 2015/16 season. The win put us 5 points behind Leicester and our ambitions for the season were changing from a ‘top four finish’ to a top one. From here we prioritised the league over other competitions and as we all know, we fell just short. What is going to be different this time around?

A year on we find ourselves in an almost identical position. We are in the 4th round of the FA Cup, the last 32 of the Europa League and are 7 points behind Chelsea. In addition to this Jan Vertonghen looks to have picked up a spell on the side-lines, just as he did during the Palace game a year ago.

[linequote]The truth is Tottenham Hotspur Football Club can beat anyone right now and every single supporter should believe that we can win the league[/linequote]

Many have pointed out that our young squad has an extra year of experience this time around and this could have been shown in the fact that we have 6 more points at this stage compared to last year. There’s a “but” coming… This year the gap is not only 2 points bigger, it’s Chelsea and not Leicester. Will Chelsea slip up in the in the way everyone thought Leicester would? Are Liverpool, Arsenal and both Manchester clubs in contention?

The truth is Tottenham Hotspur Football Club can beat anyone right now and every single supporter should believe that we can win the league. The truth is also that many thought the best team in the league finished 3rd last year.

I love Mr Pochettino and nobody can question the job he’s done at Spurs but I believe he could learn from past mistakes this time around.

A couple of seasons ago we played a second string side away at Fiorentina. Soldado has a… well… Soldado moment and we were out of Europe. A few days later we played Chelsea in the League Cup final, the game we’d saved our 1st XI for, and we lost. His gamble didn’t pay off.

[linequote]I want everything this time. No Soldado in Florence, no Chadli upfront in the Westfalenstadion.[/linequote]

Then last year we fell in the FA Cup 5th round to Palace with a weakened side. Dortmund beat us in the first leg of a last 16 tie in the Europa League, again a 2nd string side.

My point being: I want everything this time. No Soldado in Florence, no Chadli upfront in the Westfalenstadion.

Our squad has its proven fitness levels in the busy festive period ever since Poch has been at the helm. It’s not an issue. In fact our squad is getting so good, that they all get linked with moves away in the gossip every week! It’s a hungry squad, and needs to be fed with silverware before June.

We could win the Premier League, we could win the FA Cup and we could even win the Europa League, but only if we’re going for them.

Play Kane versus Gent, Alli versus Wycombe. Vincent Janssen still needs time to earn his stripes, but from the bench for now.

A great man once said “It’s better to fail aiming high than to succeed aiming low, and we of Spurs have set our sights very high, so high that in fact even failure will have in it an echo of glory.” – Whether it’s glory or an echo of it, it’s the manner we should leave White Hart Lane.
