Reasons To Be Optimistic Ahead Of 2021-22 Campaign…
Spurs fans will want to forget about last season in a hurry. It was a disappointing campaign that marked the end of the Jose Mourinho era at the club.
A seventh-place finish was Tottenham’s worst end to a Premier League season since 2009. Hopefully, things will end much better next year. Here are some reasons to be optimistic about the upcoming campaign.
Nuno Brings Fresh Ideas
At the end of June, the saga for a new manager was finally over as Nuno Espirito Santo was confirmed as being Spurs’ head coach on a two-year deal. The news was met with a split reaction among supporters.
It wasn’t long ago that Santo was regarded as one of the brightest managers in the Premier League and being linked with the top jobs, such as a possible successor to Pep Guardiola when he decides to leave Manchester City.
After winning the Championship in his first season at the Midlands club, Wolves then finished seventh in back-to-back campaigns. That was a fine achievement and exceeded any expectations had for the Wanderers.
Last season didn’t quite work out well for the Portuguese coach but this fresh challenge in North London may be what he needs. Tottenham are currently 4/1 in the Premier League betting for the top four next season and have the neccessary components for success under their belt. Thankfully, Santo inherits a much better squad than he did at Wolves and if he is able to sign the players he wants, he might just be able to get the club back on the path to glory.
Son’s Contract Extension
Tottenham were handed a big boost this summer by the news that Son Heung-min has signed a new four-year contract at the club. The South Korean became a centurion goalscorer for Spurs last season and has now netted a total of 107 goals from his 280 appearances.
Despite the fact that the team performed underwhelmingly below their target in the 2020/21 campaign, it was a great season for Son individually. He found the back of the net on 22 occasions in all competitions. It was actually his best year since he turned professional.
There continues to be a great deal of speculation about the future of other players in this Spurs squad, yet this new deal is a sign that Son is committed to continuing playing for the club.
Europa Conference League Could Bring Major Silverware
Although finishing seventh was not what Tottenham wanted last season, it does mean they still have European football to compete in. They will enter a new competition formed by UEFA, the Europa Conference League, and it may be a chance to win some silverware.
Spurs are the second highest-ranked team in the 2021/22 Europa Conference League behind Roma, who are now managed by Mourinho. They will be amongst the favourites to lift the trophy in the final at the Arena Kombetare, Tirane on the 25th of May.
With luck, the European trophy won’t be the only major title Spurs win next season. It’s about time they landed one of the domestic cups too.
At this stage of the season, all football fans are allowed to be optimistic. Hopefully, that feeling runs deep into the campaign following some positive initial results.
