Tottenham Hotspur through the lenses of history
The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been the club’s home since the club’s inception in 1882. Located in North London, the stadium can hold as many as 62,303 spectators. The squad from Tottenham wears white jerseys, navy blue shorts, and white stockings and goes by the moniker “Spurs.” The nickname for Tottenham’s team is “The Lilywhites” because of the color of their uniforms.
Over time, sports have attracted millions of bettors across the world. As a result, there are now thousands of companies that offer analysis, previews, odds and picks. And just like you can easily find Tampa Bay Buccaneers odds if you are an American football fan, you can easily do the same if you’re a fan of regular football.
What made the team famous
Spurs have won the FA Cup an impressive 8 times, however, their most recent trophy came in the form of the Curling Cup in 2008. They won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963 and have gone on to win the UEFA Cup thrice since then, making them the first British club to win a European competition.
Tottenham Hotspur have long been known for their lively and aggressive brand of football. With Premier League talents like Dele Alli and Son Heung-min playing excellent football and Harry Kane scoring over 100 goals for Spurs in the Premier League, the club has maintained its winning ways in recent seasons.
Where did the team derive its name?
The town of Tottenham gets its name from a character named Sir Harry Hotspur who appeared in Shakespeare’s Henry IV.
A soldier and brave combatant, he left behind land in what would later become Tottenham on the marshes. Tottenham’s squad eventually took on this moniker and became known as Tottenham Hotspur, or simply the Spurs.
What are Hotspur’s biggest rivalries?
Tottenham has much of competition in London, as do all London teams. Spurs’ North London Derby opponent, Arsenal, is much more formidable than their rivals Chelsea and West Ham.
For several seasons, Arsenal finished ahead of Tottenham Hotspur, and on St. Totteringham’s Day, the Gunners celebrated their victory.
While this used to be cause for celebration, in the years after the 2015–16 season, no Premier League season has ended without Spurs finishing ahead of Arsenal. It’s not uncommon for players to be sent off or for there to be a lot of goals scored in derby games.
In 2015–16, Chelsea ended Tottenham’s championship hopes in a heated match, and the two teams have continued to have a heated rivalry ever since.
In short, Tottenham is a big team in the EPL and has a fascinating history.
