How can Tottenham generate funds to spark a genuine squad rebuild?
Tottenham Hotspur is in need of a substantial rebuild that should ideally get underway this summer. Many players must leave, and several quality additions are required. A significant rebuild would of course require a large amount of funding. Spurs majority shareholder, the ENIC group has been linked with selling the club and is unlikely to provide investment to support an asset they may not own in the near future.
Ultimately, Spurs may have to generate the revenue to kick-start their rebuild internally. Player sales and commercial ventures could be methods that Tottenham utilise in order to increase the level of funding available in the transfer market.
Commercial opportunities
Spurs could certainly look for more opportunities to take advantage of the club’s huge brand. They already have partnerships in place with many leading brands such as Coca-Cola. However, there are digital avenues that Spurs have not explored yet. Online casino gaming is a fast-developing industry – people can now easily access a wide variety of classical games at the click of a button. MrQ’s aviator casino game is an example of a popular online game. The established casino gaming site offers a huge range of games that can be played in any location. Spurs could partner with an established brand like MrQ in order to offer their own branded games to their fans. Games could feature star players and perhaps even legends of the past.
A huge footballing brand in Spurs could be working in collaboration with an expert in the online gaming industry. This would surely produce successful results – fans could directly impact the club’s revenue by playing the games. The release of such games could even attract new fans to the club.
Spurs are also still looking for a naming partner for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Huge brands such as Google and Amazon have been touted as potential naming rights bidders. Spurs chairman, Daniel Levy will reportedly demand in excess of £20m per year in exchange for the naming rights to their stadium. Much of Spurs’ debts are related to paying back the loans they took out in order to build the stadium. Acquiring a naming rights partner this summer would certainly help to offset the club’s debt and free up more funds to be used in the transfer market.
Player sales
While Spurs can look to improve their revenue streams from external sources, player sales can also provide immediate funding in the summer. Tottenham still needs to appoint a new manager before the summer window arrives. That manager will undoubtedly have demands over the profile of the players he recruits. In order to satisfy those demands, the deadwood will have to depart.
The North London club can no longer afford to have passengers in the squad. Any players that are not of the required quality must leave. Funds can be generated and the wage bill can be reduced, which is ultimately the first step to addressing the club’s struggles this season.
It is time for Tottenham to finally give Harry Kane the supporting cast he deserves. Genuine world-class talents demand huge fees in the transfer market in modern football. Whether Spurs increase their commercial revenue or make significant player sales – they must generate significant funding for a new manager to rebuild the team with.
