What Positions Should Spurs Target in the Summer Transfer Window?

What next for Tottenham?

Tottenham have been in the news a lot recently – there’s drama unfolding behind closed doors that Ange Postecoglou almost gave away in an interview. To say he was less than happy was an understatement. And it didn’t help that most of his fans wanted Spurs to lose against Man City in Tuesday’s game…and they did.

Still, the season is almost complete, and it’s time to think about the summer transfer window. Below, we’ll discuss what positions Spurs should target in the summer transfer window.

Striker

Among the key areas the club should pay attention to is the forward position.

Since Harry Kane went to Bayern Munich and Richarlison with a hamstring injury, Spurs need a reliable goal-scorer. Though Richarlison has shown glimpses of brilliance in his performances, he has his injury and his performances are erratic, hence the necessity of buying another striker for Tottenham.

Replacing Kane is difficult. They have Son already, who is one of the best finishers around. However, getting that striker who can also produce and support Son’s scoring exploits will take Spurs from the good side they were this season, to the Champions League side they want to be. The latest betting odds don’t have them pushing much beyond what they achieved this season. However, an elite striker could change that.

They have Dane Scarlett and Alejo Veliz (promising talents), but they aren’t ready for first-team football.

Some names, like Viktor Gyokeres and Santiago Gimenez, have been linked with potential moves. For example, Gyokeres stands out thanks to his impressive performance at Sporting CP, which could help solve Tottenham’s problem in front of goal. But he’s still not a big name like Kane or Richarlison. Ivan Toney was also mentioned, but he may find it hard as more clubs show interest in him, making it difficult for Spurs to sign him up – he’d be expensive.

Finding an experienced striker who can begin scoring on his debut will be crucial for Spurs next season.

Midfield

Another area requiring massive investment from Tottenham is midfield, especially in a defensive midfield role.

Yves Bissouma had a roller-coaster campaign and his recent injury isn’t helping the team, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s potential exit would leave a gap in the squad. The team will require a quality number 6 that can sit deep into midfield, distribute accurately, and provide cover for defenders.

Everton’s Amadou Onana has been talked about as an available option, but Bayern are also interested in a £50 million signing offer to Everton for the midfielder. His combative nature and ability to put the team on the front foot would suit Postecoglou’s philosophy.

Spurs need some creativity in central midfield alongside defensive players. That could be a luxury signing rather than a necessity, but Conor Gallagher from Chelsea might provide that much-needed spark and energy in midfield.

Centre Back

Making their defence stronger is essential for Tottenham this summer. Although Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven form a nice partnership, they still need extra depth, especially on the left side. Ben Davies can play there also; however, Spurs require a younger, more dynamic option that will bring competition and cover.

Names like Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabioyo have been linked with the Spurs. We’d say they should consider Kelly, who could be an ideal acquisition because of his adaptability and potential.

Spurs must reinforce their backline against repeating mistakes experienced this season so far.

Right Back

If Emerson Royal leaves, it would mean that Tottenham requires a dependable reserve for Pedro Porro. The Brazilian right-back has not fitted well within Postecoglou’s tactics – there has to be another option here.

One of the potential targets is Kyle Walker-Peters, who is currently at Southampton after starting his career with Tottenham Hotspur FC. He’s an attractive option given his previous connection with Tottenham Hotspur and his knowledge about playing in England’s top flight. Bringing him back would give the Spurs quality support from the right-back position.

Attacking Winger

The squad should have the priority of adding an attacking winger. Spurs have been without a decent wide player who can dribble past defenders and create goal scoring chances for some time. This position is underrated due to the need for a striker; nevertheless, it’s still one that needs improvement.

In the list, names such as Pedro Neto and Raphinha have been mentioned, though the current focus appears to be on getting a top striker. However, bringing in a young, dynamic winger capable of injecting creativity and flair into his side’s attack will suit Tottenham Hotspur. Hopefully, Ange is reading this article…

Midfielder

Lastly, the Spurs need a strong midfielder who can open up defences and give that killer pass. With Giovani Lo Celso set to leave, there is a need for someone who can fill the void left – and it definitely will be a void. While Conor Gallagher may address some of these needs if he were signed, another option who plays in the hole or as an advanced forward would be perfect.

Lucas Bergvall is a promising talent but may not be ready for regular first-team action.

It certainly looks like Tottenham Hotspur will have a busy summer transfer window ahead of them – apparently, they need a bit of everything. Ange Postecoglou and Johan Lange overseeing signings mean that Spurs know where they want to strengthen their squad, at least. What positions do you think they should focus on the most?
