Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa: Match Preview
As we brace ourselves for the latest clash against Aston Villa, there’s a mix of nerves and cautious optimism around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Both teams are coming off very different EFL Cup nights, with us somehow managing to stun Manchester City midweek (yes, it actually happened) while Villa had the misfortune of a shock defeat to Crystal Palace. Riding on that rare cup joy and a decent run at home, we’re daring to dream again – but as ever, it’s all too easy to get ahead of ourselves.
Recent Form
We somehow pulled off a bit of a miracle in the EFL Cup, knocking out City with key performances from Pape Sarr and Timo Werner. Amazing, really, considering that was off the back of a Premier League display against Palace that looked more like a funeral procession than a football match, resulting in a 1-0 loss and a drop to eighth in the table. Our inconsistency is becoming a bit of a party trick – unfortunately, not one we’re keen to keep repeating. Ange will be hoping to get things sorted as we look up at those elusive Champions League spots.
Villa, meanwhile, were sent packing by Crystal Palace in their own EFL Cup fiasco but have been on a proper run in the league. A 1-1 draw with Bournemouth last weekend was a slight wobble, but they’re unbeaten in seven league games, snapping at Arsenal’s heels and pretty ruthless on the road, winning five of their last six away games. If we’re not careful, their away form could end up giving us a lot of grief.
Team News
Tottenham Hotspur: It wouldn’t be a classic Spurs performance without a few injuries, and true to form, the win over City came at a price. Micky van de Ven has unfortunately done his hamstring and will be watching this one from the sidelines. Thankfully, Cristian Romero should be fit enough to start (touch wood) alongside Radu Dragusin, who’ll need to step up big time. Timo Werner is expected to be available, and there’s cautious hope that Sonny might just make a return to lead the attack.
Elsewhere, Djed Spence’s groin is still causing him grief, and Wilson Odobert is confirmed out due to a hamstring issue. Ange will be hoping the replacements don’t put a foot wrong, as has been known to happen on more than a few occasions.
Aston Villa: Villa boss Unai Emery has fewer worries on the injury front. Tyrone Mings and Boubacar Kamara returned midweek and are likely to be available, though they may start on the bench. Ollie Watkins, who was rested for their midweek defeat, is a certainty to lead Villa’s attack in North London.
Predicted Tactics and Formations
Tottenham: Ange Postecoglou will probably stick to his beloved 4-3-3 setup, focusing on possession and high pressing – although, knowing us, “high pressing” can sometimes mean “running around like headless chickens.” With Dragusin alongside Romero in defence, both Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie will have to be careful not to leave the back door wide open. Yves Bissouma will be key to screening the defence and linking up play, while James Maddison’s creativity will hopefully provide the spark we’ve been missing in recent weeks.
Up front, assuming he’s fit, Sonny is likely to line up alongside Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke. Brennan Johnson is another option, offering some much-needed pace to keep Villa’s defenders on their toes. With Richarlison out, we’re heavily relying on Son and Maddison to pull something out of the bag.
Aston Villa: Villa are expected to roll out their usual 4-2-3-1, with Douglas Luiz and Youri Tielemans holding the fort in midfield. Emery’s men will likely sit back and look for counterattacks, with Matty Cash and Lucas Digne providing support from the flanks. Leon Bailey and Jacob Ramsey are more than capable of giving us headaches on the wings, while Watkins, as ever, will be looking to get in behind our back line. Here’s hoping he has an off day.
Key Battles
Midfield Control: The duel between Bissouma and Villa’s Luiz and Tielemans will be key in deciding the flow of the game. If Bissouma and Sarr can take control, we’ll have a platform to push forward and give Maddison the freedom to work his magic. But Villa’s midfield pairing are more than capable of throwing a spanner in the works, so it’ll be a test of discipline and endurance.
Wide Play: Porro and Udogie will need to balance their attacking duties with a bit of defensive awareness (yes, really), given Villa’s pace down the flanks. Leon Bailey and Jacob Ramsey will be lurking for any chance to exploit the space behind them, so disciplined tracking and positioning will be crucial if we’re to avoid yet another defensive calamity.
Watkins vs. Our Defence: Ollie Watkins is a big threat, with his movement and aerial presence a real handful for defenders. Romero and Dragusin will need to be on their toes and communicate well to handle his darting runs. Set pieces are another area where we’ve been known to have a meltdown or two, so hopefully, we keep things tight.
Final Thoughts
This match is a big one for us if we’re serious about chasing down a top-four spot. With Romero back and a chance Sonny might feature, there’s reason to hope – albeit cautiously. But defensive stability will be vital, especially in Micky van de Ven’s absence, as Villa have the quality to punish us if we’re not careful.
Villa arrive in North London with a lot of confidence and a solid away record, and they’ve made a habit of making life difficult for us. They’ll be hoping to catch us out on the counter and stifle our attack, so it’ll be down to us to stay focused, keep a tight shape, and – fingers crossed – be clinical when it counts. Our form hasn’t exactly inspired confidence, but maybe, just maybe, the home crowd can lift us to a much-needed three points.
