Kinsky’s Costly Clanger: Former Premier League keeper shares his thoughts

Another year, another cup exit—this time with a goalkeeping gaffe to set the tone

David Seaman has been talking to fellow goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer on the Seaman Says podcast sponsored by Betway.

The keepers talk about the huge error by Spurs keeper Antonin Kinsky who although young, did cost £12.5million.

Schwarzer was at the game and called the error “terrible.”  There were certainly other words used by the 6000 travelling fans for the fumble, a mistake that set the tone for the rest of the match in my opinion.

Schwarzer added,  “I think it’s one of those ones where obviously, he’s very young, he’s just come in. It’s a big step up for him. It’s a big environment. There’s so much pressure on Tottenham. There’s so much pressure on the manager. I think there’s so much negativity about it, it eventually takes effect on players.”

He goes on to say that the mistake played on the keepers mind, pointing out he looked like a bag of nerves for 15 minutes after it.

“And then the team looked all over the place and it took them 15 minutes to get back in the game. That was the moment where Villa really missed an opportunity to really go for it and kill the game off. But, fair play, Tottenham held their own in the end. Should have done better, but they didn’t.”

He does go on to compliment the keeper though, as did many a pundit and fan on the day, as despite that awful early start, he pulled off some fantastic saves to keep us at least half in the game, for a long period.  I say half in the game, because obviously the pressure from Villa was relentless and the rest of the team didn’t do enough to arrest that.  A mistake by a keeper is so clear and obvious, whereas with the outfield players, they can get away with poor passes without so much scrutiny.

“But Kinsky, I like what I’ve seen of him so far. Yes, he’s made a couple of mistakes and that one certainly was the biggest one, but I still like what I’ve seen from him so far.”

So, maybe one for the future, but yet another year where the FA Cup, or a good cup run, eludes us.  Tough times.
