While there is a focus on the here and now, Spurs must also look to the future and made an important move at the end of March as young goalkeeper Samuel Archer signed his first professional contract with the club. Key Details

The young keeper has signed a professional contract with Tottenham after captaining the club’s Under-18 team this season. Born in Hertford in 2007, he has also made the step up to play for the Under-21s, making his debut for the age group when he faced Swindon Town’s senior team in the Bristol Street Motors trophy back in November.

Archer joined the Tottenham academy during the last campaign having played for his hometown club and has since played for Barton Rovers on loan during his first year as a full-time Spurs scholar.

Spurs said of the signing: “We are delighted to announce that Samual Archer has signed his first professional contract with the Club.”

Taking to social media site Instagram to share his own delight at putting pen to paper on a professional contract with Tottenham, Archer posted: “Proud day for me and my family to sign my first professional contract. Grateful to God and everyone who has helped me along the way.”

Tottenham Hopes Next Season

Spurs have endured a disappointing campaign with a host of injuries derailing the season though they have performed well in the Europa League. Next time out, Tottenham will be determined to push the top six positions and push for a return to the Champions League.

For now though, Archer will be left to develop with the youth teams with a view to monitoring his progress and loaning him out for experience. Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman have both made temporary switches in the past with a view to learning the game and bolstering their credentials.

International Ambitions

While there is a great deal of football to be played at club level before Archer realises his ambitions of playing for the Tottenham first-team, he is also reportedly eager to represent South Africa one day. The youngster is eligible to play for the nation, according to claims in the media, as his mother hails from Guateng.

Archer will have aspirations to add his name to the stellar list of players who carved out professional careers with Tottenham have joined the club as youngsters.

Spurs have brought through a host of top names, with iconic Premier League players including Sol Campbell and Peter Crouch starting out at White Hart Lane. 

Perhaps the biggest name currently playing to make his name with Tottenham is Harry Kane. The club’s all-time top scorer with 280 goals, twelve more than the legendary striker Jimmy Greaves, Kane now plays for Bayern Munich in Germany.
