Players out of contract add to Spurs conundrum
For Tottenham Hotspur, the season is very much all still remaining in the balance. Reaching the Europa League final as their only redemption following an absolutely dismal league campaign could turn what would be seen as a disastrous year into one with a very Europa League Cup silver lining. Even if you had a list of the best non Gamstop betting sites with their odds, and enough money to fling at wagers, not many people would have foreseen Spurs reaching the final. And it could prove pivotal. Ange Postecoglou’s future is up for debate, Daniel Levy is feeling pressure from the fans, and the squad, which has been decimated by injuries this season, is due to lose several key figures, which could fundamentally shift the feeling in the dressing room.
Whilst Ange and Levy will have to wait to see how the team performs in the Europa League final in Bilbao against Manchester United to realistically find out their future, four huge names in the dressing room also remain unsure of where their future may lie.
As the North London club looks ahead to the 25-26 season, they will need to make some big decisions that could alter their pathway fundamentally going forward. In recent times, they have brought in a wealth of young talent who have struggled to perform at the highest level and looked outclassed at some points in the league due to the injuries of more senior players in the team. But now the club needs to decide whether it extends the contracts of some of these more senior players who run out in the summer or release them and seek expansive changes in the dressing room.
Whichever way the club decides to go with these players, there is bound to be some upheaval and changes at White Hart Lane this summer.
One of the biggest names that is running out of contract at Spurs in the summer is the superstar, Heung-Min Son. For years, Son worked tirelessly alongside Harry Kane to put in sublime performances for Spurs, which saw him score a bucket load of goals and assist even more. Son remains the club captain to this day, and whilst he has been injured throughout the season and not performing at the levels which many have come to expect of him, he still possesses the ability to change games. Son’s contract is up this summer, but his leadership skills and experience are valuable to a dressing room that remains overall quite young. Despite Son’s age, many would argue that he still has a few years left in him, and due to his age, his transfer fee isn’t likely to be large anyway. It would maybe be most valuable to have him around the dressing room as an asset rather than letting him leave.
Spurs also have some thinking to do over two prominent features of their midfield this year. Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma are both out of contract soon, and the club faces losing them imminently if deals are not agreed quickly. For the 27-year-old Uruguayan, Bentacur still has his prime years ahead of him, and his consistent performances at Spurs have allowed him to get the fans and management on his side. Despite lengthy periods out due to injury, he offers vision and fine passing in the middle of the park. It is rumoured that talks have already begun between him and the club for a contract extension, and this may be pivotal to the team moving forward.
Bissouma, on the other hand, has faced extensive criticism, which has eventually led to him being dropped by Ange. His underwhelming performances at White Heart Lane following his move from Brighton have seen him end the season with a damp squib. With his contract expiring in 2026, Spurs might want to try and get some money back on him before he ends up running out of contract, and it could be a good way of freeing up resources for future investments that may suit Ange-ball better.
Another big-name player that the hierarchy at Spurs may look to offload this summer is Bryan Gil. Following a limited start to his Tottenham career, Gil has been sent out on loan numerous times, where he has put in a good shift, most recently for Girona in the Champions League. Despite his clear talent, Gil has never quite gelled in the Spurs team, and many believe that his style of play is simply not conducive to English football. Spurs could offload Gil, with his contract running out, and gain some important financial flexibility for the transfer window ahead.
