Tanguy Ndombele: What Do We Know About Tottenham’s Latest Addition?
22-year-old Tanguy Ndombele has become the latest transfer to secure his place in the Tottenham team. After intense competition from the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus, Tottenham Hotspur convinced the Lyon Midfielder to sign a new £65 million contract which is set to span over the next six years, securing his place amongst Spurs until 2025. Here’s what we know about the latest transfer.
What Do We Know About The Transfer?
On 2nd July 2019, Tottenham Hotspur’s official website posted an announcement that Tanguy Ndombele had made the move to join the team:
“We are delighted to announce the signing of Tanguy Ndombele from Olympique Lyonnais. The France international central midfielder has signed a contract with the Club until 2025.”
The signing cost Spurs around a whopping £65 million (cost + add-ons) but given the promise Ndombele has shown in his career thus far, it could very well be a worthwhile investment. Ndombele is often considered to be one of the best young midfielders in European football, starting his professional career at the tender age of 16 and working his way up through the rankings from there. With such intense competition from the likes of Manchester United and Juventus, however, fans have been left wondering just what tipped him towards Spurs.

In an interview with Football.London, Ndombele (with the help of Moussa Sissoko), stated that it was actually Spurs Boss, Mauricio Pochettino, that ultimately convinced him to reject the other offers and take up the contract with Tottenham. While he didn’t give any information about what was said during the meeting, he did state that “I cannot tell you what the gaffer told me, only that I was happy with what he said and that’s why I signed here.”
His addition to the team is set to completely shake up the team, their fans and followers, and bettors. Leading bookmakers, like those found on portals like sbo.net, are already pegging Ndombele as a force to be reckoned with, and fellow Spurs teammate, Dele Alli, has openly said that he believes Ndombele could become a key player for the team.
In the short few weeks that he’s been a part of Tottenham, Ndombele has made his mark already, providing an assist to Lucas Moura, who went on to level the score against Juventus in Singapore 2-2. He’s received praise from manager Pochettino, but the latter has warned that Ndombele is still adapting to Premier League football and so it’s too early to predict just how much an impact he could have on the team overall.
Ndombele’s Impressive Past
Despite his young age, Ndombele has already had an impressive career. As a child, he was already playing for a children’s team, Épinay Athlético, just to the south-east of Paris. By the age of 14, he and his family moved to Brittany, where he went on to play for Guingamp. Despite spending three seasons as part of the youth team, he didn’t secure a professional contract there as he’d hoped, but just two years after first joining, he went on to make his senior debut in January 2014 at the age of 15 after he was called on to replace Vital N’Simba.
By June, he’d signed for SC Amiens but was trialling at other clubs at the time but was never signed due to criticism that he was overweight. He became part of the Amiens reserve team for two seasons in the Championnat National 3, playing one match in the 2014-15 season, and a more regular 18 matches in the 2015-16 season, where he also played his first-ever start in September 2015.

In August 2017, he moved to Olympique Lyonnaise for a year-long loan but went on to secure a permanent position by Summer 2018. His career was truly taking off, with 96 appearances throughout his time with Lyon, and 16 assists registered. He also went on to secure a position on the French national team – first of all at Under-21 level, and then on a further six occasions after October 2018, where he made his senior international debut.
Now, as a welcome member of Spurs, Ndombele hopes to continue his success and build upon his career further. He stated:
“I was excited to join a big team. That’s why I signed here… For me, it’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid to play in the Premier League.”
“The squad works really well together, so I hope to start well, integrate, settle into the group and then continue in the same way.”
While his potential success for Tottenham is currently speculative, the promise he’s shown alone is worthy of attention, and we’re certainly going to be watching this space.
Ndombele’s transfer certainly won’t be the last that Spurs make, with talk of Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon also rumoured to be in talks with the team for the next season and beyond. What do you think? Do you believe Ndombele was a good investment?
