The Pros and Cons of Harry Kane
The Harry Kane transfer saga dragged on all summer, and unless something happens during the winter transfer window, it is likely to be spoken about for most of next summer too. Fans are split, understandable so, but what will the Kane decision come down to?
Regardless of whether you are in favour of keeping or selling, everyone will agree that Tottenham have a better chance of winning games when Kane plays, compared to when he doesn’t. For those out there who are betting on Spurs, beating the closing odds is something that many try to do. Team news affects this, especially when it comes to big players like Kane, so bookmakers will react and change odds when they hear about him playing or not.
Pros – A World Class Striker Spurs Couldn’t Afford
Fans have held very strong opinions of Kane over the summer, and whether the team needs to keep him or sell the striker for profit. One thing everyone agrees on is that Kane is a top quality striker when playing to the best of his ability. Whether he can play at his best with Tottenham, after everything that has happened, remains to be seen.
But on his day, Kane offers Spurs hope. He is a world class striker, a player they simply couldn’t afford to buy if he was at another club. Considering their lack of Champions League involvement, they certainly wouldn’t be able to attract him to the club either.
So that begs the question, why sell him? If you want to improve, you need to build a very strong squad, selling your best player is going to put a dent in that, and make things much tougher. This may simply be a case of not knowing what you have, until it’s gone.
Cons – Squad Investment Much Needed
The biggest issue with Tottenham at the moment is that investment is needed in many different areas for them to be competing for a top four spot in the Premier League. North London rivals Arsenal are struggling at the moment themselves, but comfortably won 3-1 in the first derby of the season.
Both clubs are some way off a top four finish right now, but that result is one of many that really highlights it.
We are unlikely to see Tottenham spending £200 million on players in one transfer window, which is probably the kind of figure that is needed. However, if £100+ million of that comes from the Kane deal, then perhaps the club will end up spending more than £150 million.
Should Kane leave, fans will demand the money is spent on players, and more on top of that. This type of spending, spread around on a variety of players, can at least give competition for places in the areas where Tottenham are struggling. On top of that, the team will be hoping to find a diamond in the rough, that they can use to spearhead their new look team, and start building towards the top four again.
