Who would you bet on in the Prem League?
The Premier League title race is ascending towards its finale. We’re approaching the period of the season when titles are won and lost, careers are made or spared, and one team, one manager and one squad can bask in the glory of lifting the Premier League trophy. The 21/22 trophy has seen crowds return to stadiums and the league has produced a title race befitting of raucous crowds and amphitheatre-esque atmospheres that will roar team on to success.
But the big question on everyone’s lips is, who will it be?
Chelsea Stumble, Liverpool & Man City Battle On
There are nine games to go, and things could not be any tighter. For so long it looked like we had a three-horse race. European Champions, Chelsea, looked every inch a title challenger for a long period of the season, but a patchy Christmas period saw them fall away, and despite their recent run of form, and a game in hand on the other two, with an eleven-point deficit, is it perhaps too late for them to mount a credible challenge?
So, then there were two.
It looked for a long-time like there would be one. Man City looked to be running away with it. They had the titled wrapped in February, didn’t they? Didn’t they?! The signing of Luis Diaz has so far been inspired, and the return of Salah and Mane from the African Cup of Nations has seen Liverpool return to the scintillating form that saw them lift their first league title in 30 years in 2020. They’ve won 9 of their last 10 games which has seen them claw the gap back to just a single point. City’s form has hardly been bad, 23 points from ten games would usually be title-winning form, but Klopp’s men have barely put a foot wrong.
The End of Season Showdown
Will Guardiola be able to guide his City side to retain the trophy they won last May, or will a resurgent Liverpool pull off a fairy tale comeback? A lot will ride on one game. Sunday 10th April. Liverpool travel to the Etihad with everything on the line. The Citizens are unbeaten in their last home Premier League games against the Reds and will be hoping to ensure that run continues.
A City win in that fixture could well see them over the line and a point may even be enough. A favourable run-in sees their two toughest fixtures being West Ham and Wolves away, with plenty of teams with not a lot to play for in between.
Liverpool’s run is less favourable.
A home game against Antonio Conte’s Spurs will prove a tricky test which comes after they host their two biggest rivals in Man United and Everton at Anfield. Despite their underwhelming seasons, the occasion of those fixtures will need to be managed. There’s also the tricky test of a visit to Villa Park where they come up against their former icon, and potential future manager, Steven Gerrard who’s at the helm.
