Spurs to splash the cash in January on strengthening midfield
It’s that time of year again when we all start to wonder whether Daniel Levy will put his hand in his pocket and cement some signings to bolster Spurs’ chance of a top four finish and the chance of silverware.
Spurs have had a solid start to the season under Antonio Conte and they’re among the favourites to finish in the top four, while there will certainly be eyes on an FA Cup, European or EFL Cup win after so long without a trophy in the cabinet.
Levy doesn’t like to gamble, and there are a number of players linked to the club who would seem that way. In fact, you’d find him more likely to have a spin of roulette on sites like Casino 777 than invest in such propositions on the pitch, but it does appear that Levy is preparing to open the chequebook and invest in solid, experienced players.
Reports are hitting the newspapers that the club could complete a triple swoop, with Conte being given significant funds to add more depth and quality. Central midfield is the priority for the Italian, and he’s looking to his home country to find that with Atalanta midfielder Ruslan Malinovskyi his primary target. He’s made just two starts for the Bergamo side and Conte believes the Ukrainian could fit right into the side, particularly with Atalanta likely to accept money this winter given he’s out of contract in the summer.
Juventus are also a target for Conte and the capture of Weston McKennie. The US star is expected to leave the club and a number of admirers are in line to capture him, including Leeds United.
Spurs are currently front of the queue, alongside rivals Arsenal and he’s been on the radar for some time, although it is believed that Conte perhaps sees this signing as more of a risk, particularly given a number of injury problems and the fact the 24-year-old has made little impact since arriving in Turn back in 2020.
It’ll be the second time in as many years that Spurs have done some excellent January business, bringing in Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur last term, and Conte is adamant that something similar will need to happen again, particularly given the number of injuries the club has suffered of late.
Alongside the two midfielders, Conte is also rumoured to be keen on versatile defender Alessandro Bastoni from Inter Milan, and it’ll be tough competition to land the 23-year-old Italian given the amount of hype and interest surrounding him. It would be quite the coup, but a number of journos are expecting them to find it too difficult to clinch a deal.
Tammy Abraham is another who Conte potentially fancies adding to the squad, but difficulties around his allegiance with Chelsea may prevent that, as well as him doing well out in Serie A at present, getting himself back into the England picture.
The club may offload some players too, with Giovani Lo Celso one player expected to depart, with Levy ready to accept £18million for the player, but that would still put Spurs’ overall spending among the highest in the division as they look to give resource to Conte in their quest for silverware.
