How to Solve a Problem Like Harry Kane: 5 Players That Could Replace the Spurs Legend
It’s a question us Spurs fans have been dreading for some time, but it looks like we might have to answer it soon: How can we survive without Harry Kane?
With our talisman reportedly agreeing terms with Bayern Munich, we face being left with a huge gap in our forward line that many Spurs fans think is impossible to replace. But that is what Daniel Levy and the club’s recruitment team must do should our greatest ever striker leave before the closing of the transfer window.
But who are the top candidates? Here’s a rundown of five of the best options we could realistically sign.
Evan Ferguson
In just two years at Brighton, Evan Ferguson has made impressive strides in his football career. He quickly caught the eye of Graham Potter then solidified his position under Roberto De Zerbi as Brighton qualified for Europe.
As a centre-forward, Ferguson embodies the modern striker, sharing many attributes with Kane. He combines goal-scoring ability with the skill to link play from deeper positions, and his early goals for Brighton highlight his potential as their primary number 9 under De Zerbi.
Despite his young age, Ferguson possesses the physicality to thrive in the demanding Premier League. His intelligent movements to find spaces between opposition lines allow him to receive the ball on the half-turn and create shooting opportunities. His agility inside the penalty area enables him to adjust quickly and generate power in his strikes. At just 18, he possesses remarkable maturity in his gameplay, always looking for sensible passing options rather than going for glory.
Ferguson’s teenage years have seen him surpass the label of a rising talent. He confidently leads Brighton’s attack in the Premier League and is likely to attract interest from higher-ranked teams. His recent ascent is proof of his potential, and Daniel Levy should be seriously considering a big-money offer should Kane leave.
Ivan Toney
If Ange has faith in Spurs’ current forward options to fill in for Kane (and not many of us do), then Spurs might choose to play the long game and wait for Toney to return from suspension in January.
The Brentford ace is currently sitting out an eight-month ban thanks to illicit betting practices in which he gambled on the outcomes of hundreds of Premier League games, including ones involving his team. We know the internet is awash with betting options these days, from new no deposit UK casino lists to greyhound racing, but surely Toney could have avoided temptation given all the money he earns.
Still, if he comes back with the form he signed off with, he’ll continue to be a force to be reckoned with. He was the third-highest scorer in the league last season and has been a constant threat to big teams since Brentford’s promotion.
Goncalo Ramos
Anyone with any doubts about Goncalo Ramos following his first full season were surely silenced after the forward filled the giant boots of Darwin Nunez admirably last campaign.
The 22-year-old’s goals powered Benfica to a title win and the group stages of the Champions League, but it’s just been a continuation of his natural goalscoring throughout his career.
While Ramos excels in positional play and linking up with teammates, there are areas for improvement. His attacking movements can lack urgency against deep-lying defenses, and he occasionally struggles with intensity and technical aspects.
Yet these are overshadowed by a work ethic and tactical awareness that make him an appealing option for top teams. If Spurs get him, he won’t be the finished article for a while, but they would have one of Europe’s most prolific young strikers on their books.
Ollie Watkins
This may not be popular among Spurs fans who think we should aim a little higher, but the truth is that Ollie Watkins has just had a remarkable season for Villa.
Over his 100+ Premier League appearances, Watkins has proved himself more than capable of playing anywhere across the front line.
He has a high shot accuracy rate of 61.5% and was in the top 10 goalscorers in the league last season. Watkins also contributes to the team’s play by providing five assists and making progressive runs down the left flank. His versatility and ability to create scoring opportunities for his teammates make him a valuable player.
At 27, time is running put for Watkins to make his mark at a top team. Spurs may be his last chance to do that and in return we could get a highly motivated and accomplished Premier League finisher.
Randal Kolo Muani
This one’s a left-field suggestion, but there’s a reason why Muani has been touted as football’s next €100m forward.
The 24-year-old is just off the back of a stunning first season at Eintracht Frankfurt where he bagged 15 goals as his side pushed for Europe qualification, and he has the versatility to play on the flanks, too.
Manchester United have already displayed a strong interest in the Frenchman, but their interest has cooled in favour of other options. This could leave a gap for Spurs to exploit but then Levy might well be out off at the Frankfurt chairman’s sky-high valuation of their most prized asset.
