Ange Postecoglou: A manager fans of other clubs wish they had

Ange is the Man

Football management is an unforgiving business. One month, managers are changing the game with their innovative tactical decisions before being written off in the following weeks, finding themselves out of work and in the managerial wilderness.

Given the turbulent nature of being a manager, it’s therefore becoming increasingly difficult for supporters to become attached to the coaches of their respective clubs. As such, coaches like Ange Postecoglou are a breath of fresh air for many, particularly as Tottenham look set to stick with their Australian leader for the foreseeable future. In fact, it seems Ange is impossible not to like. What was deemed as a budget-appointment has now proved to be a masterstroke by the club’s hierarchy.

For even the most disillusioned of Spurs fans, Ange is the man for them. Likewise, supporters of other clubs who are continually pushing the panic button and can’t find the right boss for their project are wondering just how Celtic’s former coach wasn’t on their clubs’ radar.

Fan jealousy is rife

While performances on the pitch are wonderful to watch overall, the rhetoric among fans of other clubs is even more so. The Tottenham faithfuls have been subjected to numerous jibes over the years. They’re regularly hammered for not winning trophies, they’re never backed for the title in Premier League previews, and while they’re occasionally featured in the best football bets, such as Tottenham to finish in the top four at 23/10, fans don’t always back Spurs for the win in the big matches.

Thankfully, due to the presence of a manager who won five of the six domestic Scottish trophies during his time with the Glasgow club, the tide is turning. Tottenham are a force to be reckoned with once again, and Postecoglou is the main reason for that.

For supporters of other clubs that are desperate to create an identity on the pitch in the same way Tottenham’s all-action, high energy style is winning over plenty of admirers, it’s impossible not to be envious of what the former South Melbourne and Brisbane Roar coach is building at the club.

A supposed lack of experience at the highest level certainly hasn’t hindered Spurs, with Ange Postecoglou’s attacking management style resulting in the North London giants being described as a side that can actually win the Premier League. The turnaround has been immense.

Postecoglou is a likeable character

Alongside his tactical foresight is a manager that is simply likeable. Postecoglou has already been taken to the hearts of football fans, with his personality being a large reason for his initial success in the Premier League.

The 58-year-old cracks jokes with the media, he’s a straight talker, while he has also shared a number of powerful stories on his journey to date, especially during an in-depth chat with Gary Lineker about being a refugee in Australia. He’s open and honest, and his charming personality makes him a manager Tottenham can be proud of.

Spurs are lucky to have him

Compared to the likes of Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte, and Nuno Espírito Santo before him, Ange Postecoglou is on another level in terms of the affection fans of the club feel for him. Meanwhile, coaches of other Premier League sides aren’t winning over their respective fans as they attempt to stop the rot.

Erik ten Hag is facing constant scrutiny at Manchester United, Chelsea fans are still yet to be convinced by Spurs favourite Mauricio Pochettino, and clubs like Bournemouth sack managers for fun as they attempt to secure their top-flight status once again.

Thankfully, for once, Tottenham have established a connection with a manager that supporters of other clubs are desperate to create. The standard has been set.
