The fans of rival teams use their ongoing trophy drought as an excuse to speak of a losing culture tied to the Tottenham Stadium and their fans forgetting the long history of Tottenham Hotspur, a team formerly known for their legendary stadium the White Hart Lane.

Early Triumphs and the FA Cup Glory

Tottenham Hotspur was founded way back in 1882. Football has a long history on the island, and Spurs are part of it. In the beginning, they were competing in the lower divisions of English football, and there was no Premier League as we know it today. As a new club, they didn’t have to wait long for their first success. It came in the biggest cup competition in the world, the FA Cup. This was the first sign that Spurs are going to be a massive player coming forward. In consecutive years, and throughout their history they have managed to lift this cup eight times. Yes, there were periods of drought, but a few other teams can brag with FA Cup wins as Tottenham can. Their next success came 20 years later in 1920-21 when they won it all against Wolverhampton Wanderers. After this win, what followed was a 40-year drought in this competition. Luckily it ushered in the most successful era in the history of Tottenham. During the 60s they lifted the FA Cup on three occasions in 1960-61, 1961-62, and 1966-67. The 60s are the glory years of Tottenham Hotspur, and it’s because of that the rival fans tend to mock Spurs for failing to repeat what they achieved during that decade. During those years, Spurs were better in the final than Leicester City, Burnley, and their London rivals, Chelsea. 

Spurs managed to have another good decade managing to win the FA Cup three times in the period from 1981 to 1991. In those three finals, they have won close matches against Manchester City, Queens Park Rangers and Nottingham Forest. While two of these teams are not a powerhouse these days they certainly were back in the day making Tottenham’s success even bigger. 

The long history of Tottenham saw them lift the FA Cup eight times with only Arsenal and Manchester United having more with 14 and 13 respectively. Spurs are tied for third with Chelsea and Liverpool with eight each despite failing to win the competition for more than three decades. While most fans dream of winning the Premier League, the old and hardcore fans of Tottenham Hotspur dream of achieving the FA Cup glory at least one more time in their lifetimes. 

The League Success 

If you ask rival fans, Tottenham Hotspur doesn’t have anything to brag about in this domain. Yet, they have two titles to their name, which is quite more than some other London teams can say for themselves. Led by the legendary Bill Nicholson, they have become the first team in the 20th century to win a league and FA Cup double. We are talking about one of the best Tottenham teams of all time that has a trophy cabinet full of silverware to show for it. Unfortunately, their last league title came in 1960-61 and they have come close a few times since then but they have never won that trophy again not in the old or the new format. Considering that they have been playing in the top division all that time and that in recent decades, they have been seen as a member of the big six of English football this is quite a misfortune. 

As far as the lower division football is concerned, Spurs have come out on top on two occasions. The first time they won the Second Division back in 1919-20 and then secured another promotion in 1949-50 to reach the top flight of English football. They’ve been a mainstay since then, with two titles to show for. Will another come in the future? It is hard to say considering how much money is being poured into teams such as Manchester City, Newcastle, Manchester United, and Arsenal, but a true Spurs fan is hoping that their long-term planning and the wit of one Daniel Levy can bring them the much expected Premier League title. 

League Cup & Tottenham’s Most Recent Success 

While the League Cup is not the most popular competition in England it is one with a long history and while a minor cup it is still a domestic trophy. For big teams, who fail to win Premier League or FA Cup it is often seen as a consolation prize, but for most teams, it is a nice trophy just like any other. As far as Tottenham Hotspur is concerned this is the last big trophy they have managed to lift making it their fondest recent memory for fans.  

Back in the day, during the 1970s, Spurs had much success in this competition winning it twice in 1970-71 and 1972-73. In those two matches, Tottenham won against Aston Villa and Norwich City winning both matches without conceding. To win another one, they have waited almost two decades. The end of the trophy drought came in 1998-99 with a League Cup win against Leicester City.

Since the inception of the Premier League, Tottenham had good years and bad years, but every fan would trade a second-place league finish for a trophy they can display. The last of that kind came to Tottenham in 2007-08 when they managed to lift the League Cup after winning the duel against their city rivals, Chelsea. 

As far as recent memory goes, Tottenham had a go at the League Cup in 2021. Led by Jose Mourinho, they have performed poorly in the league struggling for bigger parts of the season, but yet managed to reach the League Cup final on the back of the master tacticians schemes. Yet, it all led up to one of the biggest controversies in recent football history. Jose Mourinho, famous for his tactics in elimination matches, was sacked only six days before the 2021 League Cup final. Tottenham’s European Adventures 

While not seen by many as a powerhouse as far as continental football is concerned, Spurs is not without a history when featuring in Europe. During their golden era in the 1960s, they were the English team to look after. The 1962–63 European Cup Winners’ Cup was the competition where Tottenham made a mark not only for itself but for English football too, becoming the first team from the Island to win a European trophy. What makes this success even greater is the fact that they have managed to beat the defending champions Atletico Madrid by a 5 to 1 score. 

Interestingly, Tottenham managed to win the trophy in Europe in each of the two following decades. The UEFA Cup was the next major accolade they have collected by beating their English rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 1972 UEFA Cup final. Their European history was concluded in 1983-84 when they won this competition once again by beating Anderlecht 4-3 on penalties. 

Since the ’80s they’ve been lacking in their European appearances with the closest they’ve got being in 2018-19 when they reached the Champions League Final. Tottenham was not favoured to reach the later stages of the competition, especially after a tough draw pitting them against the likes of Man City led by Pep Guardiola and in-from Ajax. Yet, by sheer luck, top-end quality, and a few VAR decisions going their way, Spurs found themselves in the final. 

As sheer underdogs, Spurs failed to put up a fight and were dealt with by early Mo Salah and late Divock Origi goals. Both fans and pundits described this final as one of the worst in recent memory due to the lack of effort on the Tottenham side led by Mauricio Pochettino, Dele Alli, Moussa Sissoko, Lucas Moura, and Harry Kane.

What The Future Holds for Tottenham Hotspur? 

Well, we don’t have a crystal ball to tell the future, but in this age of statistics and predictions, we can talk about it a little bit. As we already said, Tottenham are a well-run club and in the hands of Daniel Levy, they’re one of the naturally richest clubs on the island. The downside to their new stadium and heavy investments is the fact that others are still putting more money forth and in the next year they’re lacking Champions League football. 

The likes of Newcastle, Man City and United, Arsenal, Chelsea, and probably Aston Villa can put forth more money for players. Yet, what Tottenham has at the moment is an experienced squad led by Ange Postecoglou who is making them play some attractive football. With the likes of Heung-min Son, Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski, Cristian Romero, James Maddison, Pedro Porro, and Guglielmo Vicario they can aim to reach new heights this season. 

The season has not yet started, and with four competitions out on the horizon Spurs have something to look for. With their attacking style, they have already proved that they’re a match for any opponent and we’re looking for more of that next season.
