Pundits and Punters Predict Eighth Place Finish for Spurs in 2026/27 Following De Zerbi Revival

Can you remember De Zerbi’s first season at Brighton? The Seagulls finished sixth in the Premier League, which was the highest league position in club history. They also smashed their record for goals scored in a top-flight campaign.

Tottenham won 11 points in the six Premier League games helmed by Roberto De Zerbi towards the end of the season.

It was enough to secure Spurs’ top-flight status – that’s the most fundamental outcome of the Italian’s mini-revival, but there’s an underlying improvement that caught the eye.

Those results mean that Tottenham average 1.83 points per game under De Zerbi. Now, 1.83 multiplied by 38 games would yield around 69 points – that would have been enough to finish fourth in 2025/26.

No wonder there’s a bullish feeling about the Lilywhites as preparations get underway for next season…

The Italian Job

Some of the shrewdest predictors in sport are the bookmakers, who deploy advanced statistical analysis models and machine learning to price up their markets.

As far as the football online betting for the Premier League is concerned, Spurs are currently priced at 50/1 to win the Premier League title in 2026/27 and 8/1 for a top four finish.

That basically places them eighth in the pecking order, behind the traditional ‘big five’ clubs as well as Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

Whether such optimism bears any fruit only time will tell, but if the sharpest of minds are predicting – let’s say – a top-half finish, then clearly that’s evidence of the giant strides Tottenham have made under De Zerbi.

Hopefully, relegation battles are set to be a thing of the past… and even the Premier League are listing Spurs’ upturn in fortunes as one of their eight reasons to be excited about next season.

It’s hard to disagree with that notion given De Zerbi’s impact in his first full campaign in charge of his previous clubs…

Instant Impact

In the 2017/18 Serie A season, Sassuolo finished comfortably in mid-table – despite scoring just 29 goals in their 38 games.

That gives you a sense of what De Zerbi was walking into when he took the Sassuolo job in June 2018, but it’s testament to the Italian’s tactical nous and man management that he was quickly able to oversee change.

True, Sassuolo finished eleventh – exactly where they had in that dull as ditchwater season prior. But under De Zerbi’s lead, they scored 53 goals in his first campaign; almost double their tally.

By 2019/20, Sassuolo were finishing eighth in Serie A… and the head coach was chiefly responsible for the radical uptick in fortunes.

Can you remember De Zerbi’s first season at Brighton? The Seagulls finished sixth in the Premier League, which was the highest league position in club history. They also smashed their record for goals scored in a top-flight campaign.

And then, in 2024/25, the Italian set off for his maiden voyage as Marseille’s head coach. They’d finished a lowly eighth in Ligue 1 the season before – one of their worst returns in recent memory.

But with De Zerbi manning the tiller, Marseille would finish second, while adding seven more wins and a 17-goal swing in their goal difference into the bargain.

Given that 2026/27 will be his first full season in charge of Spurs, surely it’s full steam ahead for the good ship Tottenham Hotspur?
