If we fail to win the FA Cup and finish below 2nd - would people consider this season a failure?

What are the minimum achievements to define this season as success according to fans?

I've see many debates lately about improving the squad, rotation of players, etc - been wondering last few weeks. Personally, I'd be gutted if a squad this talented goes another season without silverware.

No.
i would be disappointed at another trophyless year with such a good team, but we have never been a guarantee of silverware in all the time i have supported them.
This year being away from WHL was always going to be difficult and to be honest i think we have exceeded expectations from what they were at the beginning of the season.

ArcspacE: difficult to say as there's still a month to go and we don't know what will happen in the FA cup. Considering the context of where we are:

Top four finish, FA cup semis, CL round of 16 and disappointing Carabao cup campaign would make me think the season had been mostly successful (7.5/10)

FA cup final and top four would be good in the grand scheme of things, but always have a tinge of disappointment for the reasons you say (8/10)

An FA cup win and top four finish would make me think we've had a highly successful season and our best for many years (9/10)

All of these are more than acceptable outcomes when you think of the expectations. FWIW I thought our 'Wembley season' would be a tough one and anything in the top six would be a decent campaign.

Out of my, er, let's call it 25 years of being a fan, we're going to clock up at least our joint-third highest league position. How is that not a success? The way people talk you'd think we've been bossing top four finishes every season for the past couple of decades. I also really thought we'd struggle at Wembley and was prepared for us even finishing below the Europa League spots.

If we win the FA Cup it will go from being a success to our best season since I was too young to be able to know what was happening in the world o' football.

No, not at all. 10 months ago we were facing up to the prospect of a season in a cavernous, soulless bowl that was nothing like home, up against some very tough competition. And the consensus as I remember it was that in those circumstances we could regard a top 4 finish as a successful season - and I stand by that. A cup win or a 2nd place finish would be a lovely bonus of course, but this was always going to be a very tough season.

In fact - we've got this thread to look back at to see our pre-season expectations.

If we finish top 4, which we should... That would surpass what I thought we'd do this year being at Wembley.

That said, a cheeky Fa Cup would be amazing.

Finishing in the top four would be a huge achievement when you consider that every potential challenger has played half their games at their traditional home.

We were a goal away from the QF of the CL and are in the semi final of the FA Cup. To be fair and given current form i would be more disappointed at losing an FA Cup final place than i would be at finishing fifth in the PL.

Christ, if we win the FA Cup and finish in the top 4, this would be our best season since, I dunno when?

Better than 08 obviously, that was just a League Cup and an 11th place finish below even West Ham.
99? Exactly the same as 08
91? Won the FA Cup but finished 10th and Woolwich won the league. Nope.
87? Came 3rd but lost the cup final. Nope.
84? UEFA Cup win, but finished 8th in the league and went out of the cup in the 4th round. Would it be better than that? Maybe, maybe not I suppose.
82? FA Cup win and 4th place finish, top team in London, Cup-Winners Cup semi-finals. Yeah I guess that was better.

So it'd be our best season for maybe 34 years, probably 36!

Think this is pretty much on the money.

I'd say 1984 would have this year beat, as the UEFA Cup meant a lot more back then and finishing 4th didn't really mean a great deal. However 1984 was before I was born, so if we can win the FA Cup this will be the best season of my lifetime. Oi fucking oi!

It’s not really black and white though is it, it’s more a spectrum of success-failure.

2nd, FA Cup - great success
Top 4, FA Cup - success
Top 4, no FA Cup - acceptable season
No top 4, FA Cup - mixed success.....trophy and shut up shyte empty cabinet chat....financial terms a failure
No top 4, no FA cup - failure, Woolwich standard

Agree with this. I recall the UEFA Cup (and even the Cup Winner's Cup) as being prestigious tournaments in their own right. Now, sadly, the Europa League is just a glorified Champions League reperchage round. Neither Man Utd (last season) nor Woolwich (this season) would have given two fucks about it had they been confident of securing a top 4 place.

To answer the OP, I'd absolutely love us to win the FA Cup, but if you offered me an either/or choice between the FA Cup and a top 4 finish, it'd be the top 4 finish every time.

As long as we finish top four I'd say it's been a very successful season. Considering Wembley and the budget we have compared to the other top sides. It would massively disappointing to lose another semi or lose to the chavs/Southampton in the final, but still a successful season overall. Sorry if I'm repeating anyone haven't read the other posts yet.

Always difficult to compare league and cup finishes from the 80s and 90s with today Pre sky it was domestic cup runs that brought in significant extra revenue and attendances were higher in cup matches than league football.

It was the era before squad rotation and in a 22 team league with endless cup replays and staying in some awful conditions behind the iron curtain , going on a cup run would have a major impact on league form. But the top 4 wasn't a thing and teams would often rest key players in the league game before a cup match. The team of 91 never got out of 2nd gear in league matches once they got to the semi-final.

It’s all about the FA Cup, this team has to win it. It’s has to end the 27 year wait, it has to realise it’s potential and win silverware. The more seasons that pass where we fail to capitalise on the talent that we have the more scope is for the elite to rebuild ( just look at the difference from this season to last and it will only get worse this summer) and the chance for silverware grows less . And this team won’t last forever, Walker is gone and so soon will be Alderwield and Rose whilst Vertonghen and Dembele are entering the last years of their career. I don’t see how another season without silvware can be considered of anything of real note. This side is too talented to be only rembered by league placings.

The league position is somewhat deceptive due to both Woolwich and the chavs shitting the bed.

However overall I’m very happy as a spurs fan right now.

An FA cup triumph would be the icing on the cake

At the start of every season, i believe we can win the F.A Cup but it has been a while now, if we achieve that this season, its a great achievement.

Finishing top 4 playing at Wembley is also a great achievement. I think bringing champions league football to the new WHL, is somthing everyone at the club can be proud about.

Overall the season is a sucess, with all things considered.

Next season...... OMG..... it could potentially be a great season.
