Put him in front of the back four and stick a dynamic line-splitting athlete like Sissoko or Ndombele alongside/ahead of him and you've got a platform on which the rest of the squad can dominate in the way they did when Wanyama and Dembele were forming a similar axis a couple of years ago.
Winks in the DM position is a square peg in a round hole. He would need a more defensive, physical and positionally astute player next to him. The evidence has been there for you to see the last 2 seasons. Winks has his qualities, and I like him as a player, but nothing in his game suggests that he should be deployed at DM and considering his injury history it is mad to suggest so. If Dembele broke down and Wanyama broke down why would one think putting Winks there is a reasonable decision to take?Winks definitely can play the DM role. I would play him as a Dm moving forward and not a box to box as he simply won't be able to contribute in terms of goals.
DLP and DM are two different positions. A DLP, Pirlo being the archetype, requires a more defensive partner to do the donkey work. He's more than good enough to play as a deep lying playmaker. His positional sense is excellent and hes tactically very smart. Obviously not gonna be a Makelele type putting tackles everywhere DM but a dm that sticks to his position and protects the back 4.
And though Winks has his qualities 'positional sense' is not one of them. He plays MF like Dawson played CB, not so much reading the game as reacting. He needs to get better here. It doesn't help that he has not been able to play off a set group of players around him nor a consistent run to build understanding but it still doesn't look like he is reading things.
No, not his game.
