Ex-Spurs Player Toby Alderweireld

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Neither happy or unhappy about him signing a new contract. Hes not as good as he used to be and opponents tend to get away from him easily and responsible for conceding many of our goals. Still his long balls are pretty good and Jose' wants that. In Jose' we trust.

Lets get Jan to sign a new contract. That would be something!

I, for one, am very relieved that we've got at least one of our first choice centre-backs to sign on the dotted line. I don't fancy having to replace two world-class central defenders in the summer.

I'm hoping Jose can work his magic with some of our other want-aways. We can certainly do without having to replace Danny Rose.

He's our 3rd choice LB. It's over.

Now Toby has signed, committed and settled his game will improve because he hasn't got the unknown going on in his head. I would love Jan to sign as I think out of anyone he deserves a good pay packet as he has been here before the Bale money and certainly showed loyalty.
Eriksen...I'm not too sure..

Eriksen's repeatedly turned down 200kpw.... There really is nothing left to discuss.

If he gets back close to the level he was at 2/3 years ago, great. He was possibly the best central defender in the league then. He’s been very average last two years though. Injury initially and I’m hoping the last year or so is down to all the uncertainty and the weight of all that will disappear now. If he doesn’t start producing the goods again, it’s not so great.

Even if Mourinho decides that he wants to purchase a replacement for Toby, i.e. a new first team regular, that still means that we have a very good squad player in Toby who will be guaranteed of playing a good percentage of matches.

Alderweireld: I cannot imagine playing for a team other than Spurs
Always cynical when players come out with this after a contract signed if he thought that he’d have committed a year and half ago and he be a lot wealthier into the bargain, by a couple of million!

From what I've heard he was ready to sign over a year ago, but got talked out of it by his father/agent who felt he could get a longer deal and more money elsewhere. I heard he'd been offered two years at £135k a week so the club must have felt he was important to us as he's ended up with £150k for 3.5 years.

By my math that's about 4.5m in lost salary over the past year. Thanks, Dad.

A cabal!? Bit harsh that. Poch has nobody to blame but himself for getting the boot mate, Toby has done nothing wrong whasoever-always kept his mouth shut in the press and tried on the pitch.
Approaching his last years as a pro I don't blame him for considering his future the last year or so before signing possibly his last contract-now hes made a decision because of Mourinho coming in which is totally fair enough imo.
Not harsh, more factual.

I really do not think that was a problem for Toby. If he improves it will be down to Jose or a more settled back 4. However his long balls are very important at present and I am surprised but pleased he is staying. If he deteriates in the last year the money saved over the last few years justifies his salary for 3 years.

“Financially, it appears a compromise has been reached between club and player. The Athletic understands Alderweireld will be paid a basic wage of around £100,000 a week, which is half of what he was pushing for a couple of years ago. The shortfall will be compensated by bonuses, a signing-on-fee, and the security of a four-year deal that will see Alderweireld very well looked after until beyond his 34th birthday.”

Hmmm. It's the remaining 6 months of his current contract ( at a higher sage) and a new 3 year contract.

All Spurs player contracts ( and most other clubs these days) have a basic wage with bonuses based upon team success and individual success/appearances and all players signed or re-signed get a signing on bonuses. So not sure The Athletic has added anything much to the story - the £150k quoted elsewhere was always a mix of basic pay plus estimated bonuses etc

But agreed it's a compromise with a big movement from Toby's agent on pay and likely an extra year agreed by Spurs - Toby's agent found last year that that no better deal was on the table from any other club
