I imagine the "£60m 28 year old" bit is a dig at William José. I don't know how many times I have to explain this but he isn't a £60m 28 year old, he's a £21m 28 year old. £60m (well, £59m/€70m) is his legally-required buy out clause, there's no suggestion whatsoever that Real Sociedad have ever sought that. Indeed, if they were, a club interested in signing him wouldn't have to negotiate a damn thing with RS, they'd only need to agree wages with WJ and then pop into the offices of La Liga with seventy million euro coins and buy his existing contract (contracts here belong to the league).

From all reports in the local press, Real Sociedad want €25 million, Spurs won't budge from €15 million (£21m/£11m).

I've no idea which is the better player (personally, like most I suppose, I'll be delighted with which ever one JM prefers) but it doesn't help if the facts aren't being presented accurately

Nothing to do with William Jose mate, it's more a look at the risk/ reward on how we do our business. If we sign a 24 year old for £30m we have outs regarding our risk, if we sign a 28/29 year old for £30m we still have ours but nowhere near as many. If we sign a 28/29 year old who flops we are up shit creek without a paddle on that particular deal.

Ndombele could well flop but we will still be able to get £40m for him, he's a £20m risk based purely on his age. A 28/29 year old at the same price and it's money well and truly flushed.

I like the look of Willian Jose but my comment wasn't about him, more the general market regarding players his age once the fee gets over £40m or so really. In that sense we are extremely well run and managed.

Out of interest, do those ‘symbolic’ release clauses ever come under legal challenge? If they are, more often than not, easily ignored and instead replaced by traditional negotiation, it could arguably make it more difficult for players to move.

If no one is going to pay the 60 million (as it is an absurd fee), it makes Jose hostage to the vagaries of his clubs negotiating team.

Not, of course, that there’s anything wrong with that; a contract is a contract. But by making release clauses a legal requirement they’ve almost rendered them useless (or at least pointless).

I think because we didn’t sign players in the numbers needed for quite sometime we left ourselves massive work. We needed to buy probably about 7 players last summer and get rid of 4-5 and instead we just got 3 so we needed another big window.

To be fair if we get Gedson, Paitek and Bergwjin we are really only short a DM, right back can wait till summer. So we have fixed our mess mainly in good time if we have a stormer this window.

Its pretty rare to buy 7 players - and its not just about cost.

Its about researching to find the right players who will complement the squad - and much overlooked - be able to integrate that many new players into the squad.

The squad management problem goes back about 5 or 6 years - very few of the 20+ players we bought were good enough to challenge for a first team place (Son, Dele and Alderweireld probably being the exception), but that is far too few and a poor % of players bought.

Personally I thought buying 4 last summer was a decent TW, but as always a couple more would have been better, but that's been emphasised in retrospect.

I'd be happy with Gedson, Bergwijk and a decent striker )plus the promotion of Tanganga) as this January TW, although one or two more decent players always welcomed

Your right it is an issue that goes back a bit. I don’t think Levy will admit it but I think not just the money (cheap punts like Nije) but the time and energy of the club so heavily involved in the stadium that we slacked a bit on recruitment.

You can see this summer with Lo Celso and Ndombele Poch getting the backing he probably wanted (to late) and Mourinho going after Gedson. It just feels like the club is now fixed on the playing side more, we look from the outside more hungry to buy and sell players.

Give it a few windows and I think we will have a rather good team not just in quality but balance.

Question: how do you put an XI in this forum with those multiple names per position as a list beneath each position?
This should help I think.

This should help I think.

I think Stanley wanted to know, if he could add more players to one position, ie. Hugo and Gazza as goalkeepers, which would mean adding more than 11 players.

At least that's what I think, he meant

A window that sees us get Gedson, Bergwijn and Piatek for a rumoured £60m or so altogether, £40m actually seeing as we've made our Eriksen money would be the best January window we have ever been involved with. Early days though but it's looking promising.

The 20 mill you are talking about will be used to purchase Le Celso. So our outlay will be between 50 to 60 mill, with that been offset in the summer with the sale of probably lucas and one or two others.

Someone mentioned in the thread why we went for Gedson, when we have midfielders, it's because we only have one conductor in the middle of the park in Ndombele, and if he is injured or out of form, we can not rely on Winks and Sissoko, to control and dictate play in our midfield, Winks barely plays balls thru the line and his meduim to long range passing is poor, plus winks rarely makes surging runs from the middle of the park.

If jOse switches to a three as he has done in our last two games, a three of Winks,Ndombele and Gedson, gives us good balance, without the need for defensive mid, short term, with Le Celso behind a two, alternatively Le Celso could take one of those midfield slots with Dele behind a two, or with the second line up a mdifield of Gedson,Ndombele and Le Cleso, Harry could play up top with wide forwards in Steven and Son.

Bale

Capoue
Soldado
Paulinho
Chadli
Chiriches
Eriksen

Lamela is the only man left standing from the Bale money. A bit sad really ... and if Bale does return this window then we are up one Eric Lamela on the deal, but arguably missed the best years of Bale.

interesting to compare this to Lollerpool’s fortunes since they sold Coutinho: arguably as big a sale as when Gareth left us. But the difference is that they reinvested the money on VVD, Mane and Allison and it transformed them. We got Bobby Soldier and Vlad....

:walkercry:
If we buy Bale and Bergwin then we are fucking idiots....one more winger max, the area we probably least need to cover
