Which is weird as he's usually always one of our best players against those sort of clubs.

If his name was fancy and we'd signed him from Spain, he'd be rated higher.

Winks isn't perfect and of course he can be upgraded but man, the shit that gets aimed at him is beyond ridiculous at times.

"Poor defensively" - a go to one whenever we concede a goal and he happens to be on a pitch. Sissoko never once got the same bile and he's no better defensively.

"Doesn't pass forward" - despite facts confirming he's the most progressive passing midfielder u23 in the whole of Europe..

Are the two main ones.

I think what it is though is that people are trying to base and critique his game on how they FEEL he should be playing as opposed to judging him on the role he is meant to be playing, which is that of a player who's aim is to take the ball, make sure we keep it and give it to Lo Celso, Ndombele, Dele etc. To try and advance with it.

agree. Basically, he does his job well.

Very agreeable. Not the most stylish but quietly effective. Certainly better DM out there but will not come cheap. A very good passer for a DM and keeps the ball well. Very good in terms of clearances and tackles against City. Turning in a modern all rounded DM
The thing i like is his attitude. And he seems to be improving, unlike Dier

Yeah, he was good today. Again.

Only cross in the performance was probably not taking Redmond down during their second goal. But beyond that, it's nice to see him with a DM behind him.

Even if that DM is Dier.

Was not very good IMO he don't really know yet how and where to stand in order to stop attacks , he should work on that .
And he's attacking play is ok nothing more :dierpochhug:

At one point he was with one of their attackers, who got away from winks and winks just gives up as if its not his responsiblity anymore even though the other guy was 2 steps away. The rest of his play was okay.

Id say your opinion is one of the better ones on this forum. But on this subject I totally disagree.

Winks just doesnt have it. Yes he can be abit all action at times. Which the fans like.

But in terms of speed of play, touch, picking a pass. Hes off the pace of a top level CM.

Thats not to say hes a bad player. But hes mid table prem. Mark Noble standard.

He’s genuinely improved since Mourinho came on. Apparently his ankle issues were still hampering him and he’s only now gotten truly fit in the last few months. In my mind he’s gone from a depth player to a borderline starter, which is great for the team.

Winks, Ndombele and Lo Celso as a midfield 3 would sure be something.
