I agree with the first bit. We are looking for a prolific striker who will play second fiddle to Kane when Kane is fit.

Everyone in world football knows we don’t drop Kane. And they know we won’t play with two strikers up top. So you are coming here to be a sub. It’s going to be very difficult to persuade a top quality striker to come here.

Jose wants far better players than a second rate La Liga striker ... so do we all.

It's obvious to me both managers would have asked for a forward.
Indeed Poch did, and got Lorente while Jansen was still at the club.
Poch used Lorente quite a lot so I can only think he wanted someone better/ younger otherwise why let Lorente go when Poch wanted a forward(s) to cover Kane or work in tandem with Kane ( Madrid away).
Reading between the lines ,it has to be Levy that is at fault, he won't buy someone out of desperation and looks at every purchase as an investment but sometimes needs must. And I believe he didn't renew Lorente's contract just to save wages and then when we drew a blank in the summer he went back to Lorente but it was too late , he already had an agreement with Napoli.

Mourinho's most important need was a striker. But theres other players in his list too for lower priority positions. Levy wont buy one coz they arent cheap. Jose still needs some goalscorers due to losing the best one we have, so he goes further down his list of players and ask we get at least Bergwijn coz he might be useful for a few goals since Levy wont fulfil the squad's number 1 need.

£166m worth of incomings in a 2 window period. If money was the issue, what do you make of the £166m we spent?

I ain't sure what the fees, wages & singing on etc would be but it would all stack up, not to mention having a player on our books that would make it far harder to bring another nonHG in with quota limitations etc.

Didn’t even consider the HG thing. I think the chances are that he would’ve scored a few goals, but probably doubtful he’d have been the difference between success and failure. Our non HGs have to be of the highest quality.

We had an emergency situation, we opted to take a chance on Sonny being the spearhead and literally within 2-3 games of the window closing he gets ruled out for the season. It's shit luck but at the time of the window closing we were actually averaging 2.5 goals a game and our plan B to Kane had actually scored 6 in 5 so the need wasn't that crucial at the time. Obviously Sonny's injury changes that but £25m-£50m all in all for a Plan C is a fair old bit of dough to spend on a play it safe option.

You know what. You make some good points except for the transfers in the Poch era which is a little irrelevant to Mourinho's need for a striker. Still Im glad you replied instead of that Bangkok wierdo who thinks Levy doesnt have the final say in transfers.

The squads need for a striker was far greater than the need for Bergwijn. If what you are saying is true that there is money and we chose not to buy a striker, then its sounds like Mourinho has been promised some big things in the summer and decided on a target of a non-embarassing league position and a decent cup run and write the season off.
