Gatsby tip..

Leicester will miss out on UCL place this season. I reckon Pereira is available for the right price as well as Ndidi, but probably well out of our price range.

By that logic, we should never make a signing again and just hope the players we have become better.
That’s not even close to the point I was making.

The logic is that we already have plenty of squad depth of ‘good’ players. We should be aiming to buy players who are better than the ones that we already have. Otherwise how can we expect to improve. The exception being young prospects.

Fair point, forgot about that. But if I remember correctly he wasn't even in the picture for England until right before we bought him, so it's not like he had an exceptional career leading up to that point.

Not breaking through ahead of Lampard, Gerrard, Scholes etc. is not really much of an indictment tbh.

In fact, if we'd played him alongside 2 of them we'd have probably been a whole let better balance and maybe won something with that team!

Problem we have is, our owner and chairman are already tight on the budget compared to other teams of our stature, and now they have a global pandemic to compete with as well.

I'd love us to go and get Ndidi, Klostermann and Ings this summer but unfortunately we won't. As much as Hojljberg isn't a dream signing, I think he's better than what we have (although I think we could afford someone like Danilo Pereira from Porto, a proper DM).

I've seen a huge improvement in the defence since we returned, which is testament to Jose for spending time with the defence, we just need a couple of additions to get push us on.

If money is as tight as some fear, I'd much rather we went 'big' at DM (eg Partey) and got creative in recruiting other areas rather than get a bunch of £15-20m prospects.

I 100% agree it makes more sense to get a top target on one area than a prospect in all areas. We have done that, we as a club are past this type of recruiting. To be honest I am not sure what the objectives of the club are currently I don’t think it’s about pushing on and winning trophies at present even though Levy says it is and has hired Jose to prove it. Which makes me think they won’t adopt this strategy but I can not help but hope I’m wrong. It’s the hope that this summer (like all summers) will be different and a surprise VDV signing will happen that kills me. Maybe my hope is misplaced but I struggle to believe that Jose signed up to a project of mediocre, pot luck signings I’m definitely not saying Levy promised £100m’s but there must be an agreement that intelligent signings are the key. Jose said he had a profile of player I have said this before I can’t imagine Jose accepting a player that doesn’t fit his profile being bought. The first two have appear to indicate this and yes I know Jose said Bergwijn was not his first choice. Out of all the players we have been linked with I’m not too sure how many would actually be on our list of potential signings. Some of the players being discussed in the group are way below par for a Mourinho team and I’m not talking transfer fee. This transfer window will be one of the most important windows in recent history for this club due to the changing landscape of the league and world football. I have hope we will do well but with Levy you never know.

We "went big" to fill the CM position last summer, and we see how that worked out. We have a club record dud on our hands.

(personally I think Tanguy will come good, just making the point)

I love WInks as much as anyone, he's just not mobile enough for me. He doesn't really cover much pitch, and certainly doesn't help us win back possession too often. He can rotate with a legitimate DM, but shouldn't be our only choice.
Winks is where Henderson was 3-4 years back. He's not a world class footballer, but he's a good player to have. If we had a proper DM then you'd probably see more from him. He can dictate play well, has a good passing range and sets the tempo with his pressure he applies.

Just at the wrong time for us.

Spurs legend in some delusional eyes because he could do kung fu and seemed like a good laugh.

Wasn't good enough to lace Scotty's boots when he arrived later. Did we ever get anyone worthwhile because of the Internacional 'link'?

Couldn't even get fucking Damiao signed when we were crying out for a striker, which may have been a blessing in disguise.

He would of been amazing had he not broke both his legs just before joining us. It really effected his career. Him and dembele in the middle of the park was fabulous. Just shows how our best teams always have a good powerful centre and have done for years.

Vazquez wouldn't fill me with much hope. Never really caught my eye over the years, and no season with more than 4 league goals for Madrid is pretty lackluster.

Issue is we didn’t fill DM so we have 4 number 8’s in Lo Celso, Winks, Ndombele and Sissoko and the balance of the team looks off.
