Tottenham set to tie Son Heung-min down to new contract

Tottenham Hotspur are set to agree a new long-term deal with Son Heung-min, ending any speculation about his future, Jack Pitt-Brooke can reveal. The Athletic understands this deal will bring Son closer to the club’s top earners, such as Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele, as a reward for the 28-year-old’s excellent form over the last few seasons.

Why has he decided to stay?

As well as improving the squad this transfer window, Tottenham were keen to reward Son with a new deal, to tie him to the club for the foreseeable future.

Son signed his last contract in July 2018. Since then he has become a key player for the team, scoring 46 goals and forming a deadly strike partnership with Kane.

But he was lagging behind the club's top earners — like Kane, Ndombele and Dele Alli — and wanted a new deal to recognise his importance to the team and to bring him closer to their level.

Now that he is set to agree one, his future at Tottenham has been secured.

How vital is he to Tottenham?

Son has become an essential component of Spurs' attack in the last few seasons.

At the heart of his success is an increasingly telepathic relationship with Kane.

Since Son joined Spurs in 2015, no duo has combined for more Premier League goals. And Son and Kane have already scored the fifth highest number of goals of any pairing in Premier League history.

Along with Kane, the South Korea international is one of the first names on Jose Mourinho’s team sheet when fit.

Who will Tottenham attempt to tie down next?

While most Tottenham first-team players are secured for the long term, Hugo Lloris’ contract, signed in December 2016, expires at the end of next season. That makes him the next priority for a new deal.

Others, such as Eric Dier or Toby Alderweireld, have recently signed new contracts, while many others are tied down for the long-term by virtue of having recently joined the club.

Kane still has more than three and a half years to run on the long-term deal he signed in 2018.

Should be on same wage as Kane and Ndombele.

Son's purple patches before usually involve absolute screamers. He isnt even having to do that at the moment. Dont get me wrong his finishing has been quality but his runs have changed since Mou came and he has been turned into a monster.

Getting him playing closer to Kane has certainly helped.

Let's not forget in Mourinhos first 7 games and playing with Kane, he had a hand in 7 goals. Then he got a silly red against Chelsea.

By the time he had come back from suspension, Kane was with an injury that should have kept him out for the season if the lockdown never happened.

Its a shame we potentially missed out on CL last season due to suspensions and horribly timed injuries to both Son and Kane and we are now seeing what they're capable of consistently.

The link up between him and Kane at the moment is ridiculous. The scary thing is it actually feels like there is more to come from the partnership

He hasn’t really been playing closer to Kane. He’s playing further forward and Kane has created space for him by dropping back a bit and/or playing wider. Most of the Son/Kane connection has happened when they are far apart. Before Mous changes, Son was playing either way too deep and/or wide to be really effective. He can easily beat 1-2 defenders but the way we were previously set up, he was having to beat several defenders on and off the ball to be a real consistent goal scorer. If you recall, when Kane was out, Son played in a similar area to where is he playing now and had pretty good/consistent success and that was without Kanes impeccable service. There’s no telling how good this pairing can be with the way it’s set up now - we are fully utilizing their strengths which speaks volumes about Mous coaching.

True. There were instances in the previous seasons where it seemed like they were sometimes ignoring each other. Even in that Everton match, there was a couple of occasions where one of them ignored an easy pass to the other to put him through. But something happened during that Southampton match and ever since that, they are passing to each other even when in good positions to shoot themselves. Long may this continue.

How will players stop Kane and Son with a reinvigorated Bale on the right?

We hands down have the best offence in the league. By a wide margin.

Good question. Fouling can only get you so far as Manure found out with the quick free kick. It isn't a matter of stopping one but two. But all good. Lock them two up and who else is there...Bale. :mourbringit:

If I were an opposing manager I would park the bus and kick balls waist high in our box. I'm guessing we will have a good display of this against Burnley. They are quite well drilled in the boring dark arts.

Sonny and Kane probably share periods at the moment they are so in sync.
