I genuinely don't get the stick Southgate receives. He's been a breath of fresh air for England, can't think of a single thing he's fucked up on off the pitch, in fact, he's been classy and he has the media by and large eating from his hand rather than the other way around. On the pitch, we've been largely good, far more watchable (in the context of International Football) than we've been for over 20yrs and done largely with a young squad. One tournament down (not including the Nations League) and he achieved more than anyone else has in 30yrs, we are now genuinely a top International team.

Really?
Most over hyped under performing bollocks in ages.
2018 WC was a joke, we got to the semi by beating minnows. As soon as we played any decent teams we got beat.
Qualifiying for the 2020 Euros was a walk in the park.
Same old shit, different face.

One goal from open play in five nations league games (a massively deflected shot).

3 cbs and two holding midfield players when as you say we have such an exciting squad. He speaks well but his selections are awful and he needs to go. He is strangling the life out of these young players just as he did as u21 manager

They are friendlies dressed up as competitive games mate. Germany loses a huge % of their friendlies, yet win most of the tournaments. During these games, multiple players pull out or aren't available for selection.

And some of our fans say Jose is a negative manager! :mourfacepalm:

"Underperforming" - On what basis are we underperforming? We've won the World Cup ONCE in our entire history, this makes us quite shit. In fact, we've barely made it to a semi-final just to underline that.

You've just described what most World Cup-winning teams do when they get to the final stages of a tournament, to get there you have to beat the mino's, something we've rarely done. (Italy have bored their way to 4 WC's by just getting past the mino's and just beating a couple of good sides) it's the very definition of tournament football.

Agreed.
In 2014 Germany, altthough a great team, had some poor games.
They beat a 10 men Portugal (albeit 4-0) in the first game. After that a lucky draw vs Ghana and a narrow 1-0 win vs USA, in the knout out stages narrow wins vs Algeria and France, before that crazy game vs Brazil.

No one remembers the games they had vs USA, Algeria and Ghana. Or cares. They became World Champions.

We've been pony in this last two international breaks. Line-ups are becoming more and more negative and it feels like we're rapidly regressing since the great results against France and Spain.

They are friendlies mate, with many players pulling out.

If they are friendlies and they don't matter then why be so negative? ...Why deviate from plan A (if a more attacking impetus is the intention for bigger games)? .....Why pay so much respect to Iceland & Denmark?

The way things are playing out we'll reach the next tournament with no real idea of what our A-game and best line-up is.... As usual.

We were scoring for fun playing with a back 4 during the Euro qualifiers, yet have reverted to a back 5, just 3 attack minded players and players in unfamiliar positions all over the pitch.

The logic to all this is backwards.

We have peak Kane and a load of attacking players to build around him yet we can't score.....

And yet we have a squad full of players who play in the supposedly strongest league in Europe. Many of whom are rated as world class. Then they turn up for a match against Columbia and barely manage a win on penalties.
Play Belgium twice and get beat twice, play Croatia and get beat by Croatia,
Given the hype of Southgate Vs the actual achivemenbts (none, none at all) we have under performed. If there was no such hype. If people said "same old England" then we would have performed as expected.

Southgate is a nobody. He's never done antyhing as a coach. England are dire to watch.
He's just another face to play the players the FA tell him to.

This is not a pro-Gary retort, but:

Aside from Kane, who are our other genuinely world class players?

True

England is awful to watch.

3 centre halves and 2 holding midfielders. You'd think this was a depressed versions of the 80's teams.

Sterling.

Alexander-Arnold, Sancho and Rashford are decent too. There are a few very talented young players that could become very good.

Sterling and TAA there's a debate to be had (though personally a no from me)

Rashford (?!?!?) & Sancho..... Nope.

Why care at all? They are friendlies.

All I see on here (not necessarily specifically you) is how "meaningless" these "friendlies" are. How fans raging (which if my memory serves me you were) at Southgate for playing Kane (even though he er didn't). Yet now it would appear that Southgate IS being measured by the same people who think that they are meaningless!!! Make up your minds, they are either meaningless or they aren't.

Where is it written that as part of your preparations you have to play expansive football in friendlies? Where is it written what type of football should be played in friendlies? Why does there have to be a linea line on show towards an end game?

You've just witnessed the integration of Grealish, surely one of the most creative players in a long time to pull on an England shirt, surely a player that will (and did) link up well with Kane in an actual tournament.

Grealish played well all last season for Villa and didn't even get called up half the time. Another example of sourfaced Southgate not having any balls. More interested in picking players with the biggest social media following.

Talk about rewriting history!!

Going into the World Cup we were NOT expected to get beyond 1/4 final....we did.

Going into World Cup who the fuck in that team was "World Class"? This was the team: Pickford, Stones, Walker, Maguire, Henderson, Trippier, Lingard, Young, Dele (Sub: Dier, Welbeck, Cahill, Jones, Delph, Rashford, Loftus-Cheek, Rose, TAA & Pope). I'd say Kane & Sterling.

Both Croatia and Belgium were better than us. (we beat Belgium 2-0 though but I thought we played much better the other day than when we beat them 2-0, why omit this game?)

So, from that lot who are the "many rated as World Class"?

The last para is ridiculous and not really worthy of a response.

If they're "just" friendlies then why play them at all? (Rhetorical... We know why; no need to answer.)

However... Seeing as they ARE being played and seeing as players are physically at risk then at least use them for progressive means (i.e. honing the team for full-blown competitive games)..... Ergo all the questions and points I made in my prior post.

The bottom line is we ARE playing these games, so why are we proceeding the way we are? What purpose does so many of these management decisions serve?

I'm sorry, but being pre-occupied with the selection of Grealish in isolation entirely ignores the bigger picture and again does nothing to address the questions I posed.... And by no means is it some bold gesture on Gary's part.
