Had that fruitless discussion over and over and over again, where many nostalgic fans keep referring to Teddy and Gazza and the dentists chair. After all, they were still pretty good at football, aye?

Well sure, but imagine how much better with todays coaching methods, nutrition, recovery and mentality specialists around.
Maradona would have had a nightmare getting through the Prem's Xmas period.

Having said that, I seem to remember that our groundsman regularly won awards for the pitch in the eighties/nineties didn't they ? Am I remembering that wrong?
That may be true, I can't recall. Maybe because our pitch was less muddy then the others.

But come this time of year there was never grass, it didn't reappear until the final weeks of the season (maybe we might have relaid an entire pitch, I know that when Everton was good in the 80's they would do this quite often in the winter accompanied by many newspaper headlines).

Maradona was a great player in an average side when Argentina won the WC
Pele was a great player in a great side in 1970
Big difference
Brazil probably would have won it anyway without Pele
No chance Argentina would have won it without Maradona as he carried the side in 1986

As good as Messi is for Barca he has never come close to doing that for his country
Would you say it would be like Wales winning the World Cup with Cardiff?

I've always thought WHL looked gorgeous.

In the summer yeah. We've always had the grass cut short too, even in our Graham hoof the ball days don't remember specific instructions to leave it longer.

This is what it typically looked like, this is March 1992, so would also assume we had underground heating by then(??)

A bit earlier, guess it's a FA Cup semi?? So April??

They then promptly set about trying to kick him to death...love football
But that was part of the competition then, part of the challenge. I'm sure that if Maradona was playing in this era he would be going down following a tackle or even being touched in the box.

Whilst the quality of the game, ball at feet, is so, so much better today than it was back then, maybe as a result of getting rid of the leg breakers etc I do miss this element of the contest, both watching and playing.

No-one rolled around on the ground when fouled, it was all about not showing the pain, getting up quickly even though you were in absolute agony and barely able to walk for the next 5mins. Then patiently waiting for your moment to land your crunching tackle on a teammate or if you were lucky the same guy who inflicted your pain, for the perfect revenge.

Then there were playing against the "notorious", big strong dirty fuckers, who's reputation went before them, you knew what was coming, your challenge awaits. What is there to be scared of nowadays?

I miss it big time but do I want it back in the game? Nah.

There's a little bit of revisionism about the Messi/Argentina 1986 World Cup win. It's not like he dragged a bunch of footballing novice total outsiders to a win, Argentina was a major footballing nation who'd won the WC 8 years prior. And he did a similar thing to Messi 2014 in helping get them to a final in 1990 and losing.

I'm not trying to denigrate his legend, he's was a phenomena who was often a game changer, but Messi came close to a similar achievement in 2014, a decent but not exceptional team bar Messi, but doesn't have a win on his CV just through a bit of bad luck and finishing by his team mates (Higuian missed a sitter at 0-0 from what I can remember)

Football players from intrinsically different era are incommensurable so comparing them is foolish.
It’s like asking who was smarter, Aristotle, Newton, or Von Neumann. They operated in environments so alien to one another that comparing the people in them is like apples and oranges.

Higuain did the same in the Copa America final iirc.

He's cost Argentina a lot on the international stage

Thought the Argentina team of 86 had some great players. Ruggeri and Brown were great players, strong as fuck.Batista wandered about the midfield, booting fuck out of anyone who came near Maradona. Burruchaga and Valdano were two of the best attacking players in the tournament.

Obviously Maradona coming up with 5 goals and 5 assists was amazing, but it was far from a one man team.
