Which gets you back to gross incompetence. If no one else in the world could get close to affording his wages...then why did they give him such a wage which could and would sink their club? Could have paid him half of what they did and no one else in the world could afford it, still.

They let Messi be bigger than the club, and now they should have to pay for it but we all know they won't have to.
It's a massive wage but IMO his contract is not the issue, he's simply the best player on the planet and has been for almost 2 decades. Basically, he's been worth it IMO.

Messi has enabled them to win CL's and get above Madrid in the bragging rights, which meant the El Classico brand went ballistic globally seeing Barca the main beneficiaries with international markets lapping up brand Messi and brand Barca.

The gross incompetence, however, can be aimed at practically every other transfer they've conducted the transfer fees they have paid, salaries each come with and the lack of revenue they've generated through player sales. This element is where I see the incompetence and miss-management.

Its incompetence in the vein that they paid well over market price for something which meant that the margins in other areas of the business needed to be better.

Your point that he's earned them a fortune and this is worth it, in a meritocracy, obviously makes sense. But in the cold, hard business sense they could have told him years ago to accept half those wages or get the hump and retire - as there's no one in the world who could have afforded to pay him more. So, regardless of what value he produced they overpaid for him.

There's also reason to believe their reckless spending on other players was largely aimed at keeping Messi onside.

Just shocking that they've ended up here. FFS they were the ones "too pure" for a shirt sponsor until very recently.

He would have been bought by PSG, just as they etched a similar deal with Neymar.

He's been the principal reason on what their success and revenue generated thereof has come from. I argue they didn't overpay for him, they paid a ludicrous fee but that's what the most influential player at the Club and the best player in the World will cost. He and his contract is worth it. They have literally generated billions as a direct result of him.

ALL the other contacts on their books aren't, all the other contracts are shite and over-priced, including wages they pay to some of their academy grads. These deals are the deals that are the millstone around their necks.

The money is obscene but so is the revenue they generate, that revenue is largely attributed to what Messi contributes both on and off the pitch (commercially).

You can't really claim PSG would have just signed him if they'd paid him less using Newmar as evidence, Neymar's contract is 1/3rd of Messi's without all the other bonus payments and PSG has already drawn attention for FFP (as ineffective as it is). No way they could have signed Messi on top of that for anything remotely touching his wages - and thats the point.

Regardless of the value he produces, no other club could afford to pay him half of what they paid him and thus they've overpaid.

On merit however, yes, you're right he is worth what he's paid.

This is very interesting...and just depressing as well. We were 9th 20 years ago and we're 9th now (though we've increased our value as a percentage of the world's most valuable club 5 fold (about 8% to nearly 40% during ENIC's tenure....more depressing that despite all the progress we've still such an immense gulf to cover).
