Said it back in the spring about the ESL, but the real monsters who will destroy football aren't the financial dopers...its the suits. The financial dopers don't care about making money, but that's the only reason the suits are in the game. The Glazers, FSG, and ENIC are the real bogeymen.

5k for a season ticket? Gonna be triple that.
The suits have always been around though and the game has always been about making money, else why build stands, charge for tickets etc? The big clubs got big because they made money, then they increased stadium sizes so they could get more in, charge more money etc, etc.

This isn't a new concept, it's just got bigger as media has made the World smaller.

The ultra rich owners isn't a new thing either, it's just a difference in scale.

Football is a drug to the masses, as long as there is a demand from the likes of us, there will always be suits to exploit it or oligarchs with their toys, they're no more immune to the drug than we are.

I agree, though I still think what we see now is a completely different animal. Or at least a much more highly evolved one. The suits previously were businessmen, and there were hundreds. Just trying to plod away with their football shop and make money off it.

What you have now is corporate ownership of the marketplace. Not just looking to make money off their shop, but leverage and manipulate the entire industry in the single minded pursuit of profits.

Its not much different that the corporatization of the film industry. Yes, it was always about making money. But it used to be about commercializing creative entertainment to generate revenue. They took risks, delivered original content and bet on volume - sure there would be plenty of busts, but there would be hits too. The corporate suits who have bought it now, however, are supreme data counters...they realized a long time ago that what we really want more than entertainment is distraction. That we'll happily watch whatever they give us to watch - they don't need to take risks, we'll happily just watch the same shit remade every few years over and over and over.

Football is the same way. The corporate suits realize that the only loyalty in football is between us and the game. They don't need to provide us with anything, really, because we just want the distraction. And we'll pay whatever they want, as long as they just roll the ball out there.

So, its the same as always...but different than ever.

Yup, very well put.

When you get right down to brass tacks then, the problem isn't the suits, it's us.

En masse, humanity isn't really that smart. We're happy to accept our lot in life as long as we have the creature comforts, something that, even for a short time, suspends reality and allows us to either just switch off or daydream. We are the most exploitable commodity there is, and there's Billions of us.

Most will do no more than dream about being at the top of the food chain, whilst many rail against those that are. We'll complain about being exploited, yet do sweet FA to change that reality.

The funny thing is, whilst humanity as a whole isn't really that smart, it has a lot of power, it just hasn't got a clue how to exercise it. We're so scared of losing the little that we do have, we're not, as a whole, prepared to gamble that against what we COULD have.

Sounds very Marxist that hey? 😆

I'm afraid that human nature will always get in the way. To really make a difference to the game, people need to vote with their feet. Don't buy the ticket, don't subscribe to the media sports channels, don't buy the merch. Were we able to do that, there's no commodity to exploit.

The problem is though that for every one of us that did that, there's at least 2 who'll take your place.

So we've only really got ourselves to blame. How many here have complained about the season ticket prices, yet paid them anyway? We kid ourselves that we do it out of Love for the club, yet I see so many absolutely miserable as a result of it, so why do it?

Like I said, it's a drug, and the suits et al know we're addicted.

Have you ever known a drug dealer tell his customers that they won't sell to them? Or do they just charge them more because they know they can and those customers will still come back for more?

The only way to change our game is to break the habit en masse...

But this is the real World, and we know that that'll never happen.

Sometimes the press claims they were right in making predictions about this and that player joining Spurs (or any other top club for that sake....but it's not hard when they make so many guesses,. Yes, the list below is a compilation of all the players I saw who have been linked with Spurs for this transfer window alone!

It's all Levy's fault I tell you.

It's all so he can say "I tried" whilst having no intention of signing anybody.

The press has a vested interest in trying to mention a lot of players allegedly being scouted by Spurs and being made transfer targets - same players often linked with our rivals too. Reason they do it is "clicks," - they get money out of advertiser's out of it or they sell newspapers ( in the old world)

If you revised your list to be those linked by " credible sources" ( and we might disagree with who some of the credible sources are ) I suspect two thirds or more of those players disappear.

If you then showed the revised shorter list to our transfer team they would probably take out at least 75% of them - but add at least a dozen players most of whom neither of us have ever heard of and say "that is our short list of say 25 players who we have started negotiations on to see if there is a deal to be done.

And of that 25 maybe sign 6 players.

So all those links make for good entertainment, but we ought to know that at least 75% of the links ( maybe more) are just a journalist' s dream , it's not reality.

Or the journalist is fed some BS from an agent to get some interest in their player eg Spurs are interested, better get a move on if you want him

But that is where most credible sources will work out they are being misled.

No guarantees of course but we need the best sources to work out the genuine stories and ignore the others. That's why many sources are useless - they repeat everything without "sense testing" the stories......as that gets more clicks.

Or just go watch a local team for a tenner. I struggled to afford to go to games in the 90s just as I do now. My dad struggled to afford it in the 70s . It hasn't changed all that much for a lot of people; same as it ever was.
