Manager Antonio Conte

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Happy to be corrected, but my understanding is that Conte’s greatest strength is that he is a genuine coach. He drills every element of play, over and over again, until it is second nature for the team.

He is the direct opposite of Jose in that he has a very clear idea of what he wants. It is an active, if slightly pragmatic vision, rather than a reactive one (namely, sit tight, defend, and then hoof it to Kane).

Like you, I don’t think he fits our culture at all, but he knows what he wants.
I agree with this, it's why he's good. He coaches and he has the team that he coaches on board.

I can't think of an example where his team has downed tools on him, plenty of examples of him downing tools on the club though. Which, if we are prepared for then for a 2yr spell I'm kind of OK with the appointment.

Said this yesterday in another thread but seems relevant in here:

What would be the point of Conte?

Conte isn't a "project" coach who'll come in, cheer the place up, work harmoniously with a DOF, buying and developing some reasonably priced ,young, promising players, moulding them over 2/3 years into a proactive, progressive team with a positive identity that we can all suck each other off about.

He's a fuck off everybody, my way or the fucking highway, give me the fucking tools now, get the job done and fuck off quickly type of guy. And we aren't that club. He isn’t going to get the tools now.

Let's stop trying to pretend to be what we aren't. Go back to knowing what we are and recruit a manager that matches our resources and realistic ambitions.

If true, I think this is another miss step by Levy, like not cashing Kane in the summer. He’s trying to do “big club” things , when we need to do “smart club” things.

A club that has its shit together would have got this right in the summer instead of being forced out of humiliation to go back and beg the guy to come save us; having wasted all this time and so many points dropped.

I don't know how Conte can get anything out of this squad in the immediate future. He must have assurances that this season is a write-off as far as anything significant. I doubt even 4th place is possible at this point, having dropped so many points this early.

Agree.

The DNA stuff I think we need to look to Paratici for this, Levy's doesn't have a clue in this regard.

With Paratici, for me at least it's my big question mark, does he have a style of play that he favours, if so what? Does he care about one? I'm just going to scrutinize the signings based on their profiles and take cues from that.

I don't think those questions can be answered until post-Conte and what happens after that but one would hope that when you sign a manager to a 2 year deal that a longer strategy is being executed behind the scenes???
Paratici is Italian, they are strong on defensive organisation and a functional effective kind of football. Look at Juve while Paratici was there for all your answers.

It will be interesting to see how the Conte/Dele relationship develops.
Probably like this.
Season 3 Leave GIF by Martin

The big question is, IF Conte comes, is this because Levy is just trying to take heat off his own back and it's actually another exercise of false ambition?

What I mean by that is, will we get Conte and fail to back him?

Having a big name like him will take the heat off Levy for at least this season, would be a smart play from the chairman to give the impression of ambition with only a small outlay.

Or is it finally a case of ENIC and Levy going all in and trying to make us truly compete for trophies?

Abandoning the frugal ways of the past and finally realising if we want to compete we have to actually put the football first?

I can't imagine Conte would join without ironclad promises of funding, can you?

If he won’t back Conte then the fans need to run him out.

I think Conte would only be coming here if he had been promised that he would be backed. With Covid & stadium situation looking more certain than the summer, perhaps we do have more funds for the transfer window.

I think Conte is a good signing even if he only stays til 2023. Firstly because he's a world class manager and I actually think our squad is suited to a 3-5-2.
Secondly because I think he has the pull to bring in top players. Vlahovic & Kessie both have contracts running out, so will have many choices. Conte gives us a chance of bringing in both. Let's say Potter took over in 2024, what would he prefer, a squad with Vlahovic and Kessie, or relying on Scarlett and Dele?

You really can't trust someone who would pass up Conte first time around for Fonseca, Gattuso and Nuno just to save money.

It’s pathological, he always tries the cheap option first even if it make zero long term financial and strategic sense. Levy going cheap is like a heavy smoker reaching for their next fag, he is addicted and can’t help it.

Does paratici have a clue either? He was the one who suggested Nuno by all accounts.
It's way to early to make that call.

Without a doubt, the Nuno hire will be a black mark against him but a bit of me feels for him seeing he hired him before he was even in the job himself!

But I can applaud the fact a decision to pull the plug on Nuno came so quickly, many others would have stuck it out for far longer for fear of looking a dick, so I admire his balls. If he pulls off Conte then that's not a bad way to redeem himself (even if Conte hasn't got my pulse racing I'm not denying the importance of this hire as anything but a coupe).

I don't think we'll finish 4th, but we're 5 points from that spot in the table with 84 points left to play for. We're actually in a pretty decent position for a team that's lost badly in every challenging game on our schedule to date.
