However he did drop bale from the final just after I think he scored a hatrick the previous game. Made no sense to drop bale one of our true gane changers at the time.? Just didn’t make sense. To boot we played absolute gutless in that final didn’t even attempt to win. He had nothing to lose but still didn’t take a chance. Also tanguy who was playing regularly up to that point was discard completely like a bad apple and never to be seen again under mason. His choice but when your trying to win a cup and you bring on sissoko ahead of tanguy then your judgement and professionalism is going to be questioned.
He didn’t just pick any old Winks. He picked an unmatch fit Winks who had played 17 mins of the last 6 matches, ahead of a serial big game player in Bale who ended up the season with the most goal involvements in the PL per minutes on the pitch- and the 2nd highest ever. Shocking decision in our biggest match for a couple of years, especially when you consider Mourinho got the boot in part because of his appalling negativity. It’s almost like Mason had not watched any of our matches that season.

To be fair, Winks was far from our worst player. It was still 0-0 up until the 82nd minute.

Our tactic was clearly to keep it even for as long as possible and to go in for a late winner. We 'saved' Bale for the latter part of the game, when his pace would be more effective against a tired City.

Bar our center backs, Winks had the most touches of any of our players and the highest past success at > 85%

I am not blaming Winks. It was cowardly football that replicated the failed tactics of Mourinho for most of the season. And Winks may have had most touches bar the centre backs with the highest pass success as you say but when most of those touches are tippy tappy risk free short sideways and backwards passes then it is no surprise that he topped these particular stats.

Conte is not going to accept someone being forced into his coaching staff against his will. Mason is there because Conte wants him to be there. He knows the squad, he knows the club and he is a promising young coach who can learn a lot from him. He is not some spy put there by Levy.

High pass success rate isnt supposed to be a good stat unless you have loads of assists.

If you pass to the nearest guy ,who is being marked , in a straight line, they give the ball back to you. You can get loads of touches that way and the safest pass will also give a high pass completion stat.

Some stats, out of context, are pointless.

How many chances did he create with those passes ?
"But he plays deep"
So how many times is he involved in the build up to a goal?
"But he's a DM"
How many times does he win the ball, how often does he get dispossessed?
"But thats not his position, its Poch's fault"

Fair won't come into it once you've mentioned the W-word.

You can't question his friendship however.

:contefacepalm2:

Young inexperienced caretaker manager on a short-term remit starts from a basis of players he trusts..........

Hard to fathom isn't.

Btw, Mason had no prior playing relationship with Sissoko so it's yet another clear reflection on Ndombele and how he doesn't endear himself to managers in training; not nepotism.

If Hojbjerg hadn’t missed a 1-on-1 with the keeper from 8 yards we would have gone to penalties and everyone would be saying the tactics were right.
Going toe to toe in an open game with City would have been madness. We have beaten them multiple times recently doing the opposite.

Agree completely. It's absurd for anyone to think otherwise.

Yup...... But for a momentary lapse of collective composure late in the game we'd had made it to pens too.

.....In the final of a competition that the oppo absolutely owned for half a decade.

....Against a team that has quality & depth to die for and that had abslutely battered us 3-0 mere weeks before.

it's weird as Scott Parker was worshipped for a lot of this sort of football. I'm not saying Winks is a shoe-in but in the past we've praised players who do the simple stuff well and run until empty.

We. ‘saved’ Bale but when it was possible to go for the win later on because City weren’t all that he brought Sissoko on ffs

Can’t say I worshipped Parker to be honest but he was more effective than Winks. Does Winks really do the simple stuff well though as you seem to be inferring? Most professional players can pass sideways and backwards. He seems a lot easier to beat one on one than Scott Parker was and he is not exactly strong in the tackle either. To be fair he did show that he can be positive at times when he came on against Vitesse the other night which he needs to show more of against better opponents

Parker was 10 times the player - was willing to die in the tackle for us

This soft cunt pulls out of the first 50/50
