Our Squad is not a top 4 squad. So many poor signings, we are average. If we get top 4 it will be a fucking miracle and Conte will achieve god like status.
The manager is top 4 material. That may be enough because a great manager can make the difference between top 4 or not. Conte last season would have got us top 4 IMO.

This season has been dross, truly, but if we win our game in hand we're 4th. Top 4 has to be the standard to which Conte is judged, because the squad is certainly capable of it. The reason we hired such an accomplished manager is to raise the level of the squad.

The real issue is we, and the rest of the league, are well behind the title contending top 3. Closing that gap has to be the focus in the summer, but for this season we should absolutely be looking for 4th. 5th is the minimum acceptable spot, though a disappointment, if we're running United close. 6th is a failure. Anything less and we might as well kept Nuno around and saved the buyout money.
We are capable sure but we do not have the 4th best squad so getting 4th would still be an over achievement and will rely on United underperforming essentially.

I'd also say there's nothing much between our first XI and Woolwich/West Ham these days. Kane and Son give us the edge in theory despite us being weaker in other areas as goals win games however.

Nuno had us looking like complete dross and we were underperforming but I'm no longer willing to overrate the quality of this squad. Way too many limited players to look a real force and it will take time to improve this.

Desperately need another attacking player (or three) who can control the ball and create something of quality and even more desperately need to add a couple of midfielders - a 6 with some football in him who's also got some dynamism and a decent 8 type who can progress the ball well.

And then we just need a LB a RB, 3 CB's and a goalie.

So, we need 9 to 11 players to make you happy? might be a while. Think Reguilon looks the model, of players like in Poch's first season, who may just prove decent/effective players.

To me, we are most hampered by our star man turning to toffee, all our play runs through/to him, but he's a stuttering mess except 5-6 moments a game.

Torn, kind of think you're right, but also that Lo Celso, Romero (if ever) and a few others may draw those needs in. Would you actively sell Kane? To help fund this?

We're 4th currently if we win our game in hand against 18th placed Burnley. Out of the other 4 matches in the first half of the season we play 19th, 9th, 10th, and 3rd.

The squad is good enough to be top 4. The issue is perception - we focus on how far off the title contending clubs we are. In reality, its an exponential curve. The gap in talent and execution from 1st to 4th is likely approximately equivalent to the gap between 4th and 15th.

Odegard again - how the fck did we get PEH and they got Odegard - fn Maureen!

Weve become such a negative team and some of our signings in recent years? Sanchez Bergwyjn sissoko seriously really do have to question the last 3 or 4 years worth of signings!
Odegaard is actually shit. If he was good he’d be playing his prime years at Real but they sniffed him out almost as soon as they bought him.

Which is why I said its the standard Conte should be judged against. We have a squad that's as good or better than everyone in the mix for 4th bar United. We have, supposedly, one of the best strikers in the world still.

And we have a top 3 manager in the league, if not the world, again supposedly. Its up to Conte to add the value thats lacking in the squad between now and the summer - that's what he's here to do. That's why you hire an elite manager.

Good Result.

Moving the ball out from the back much quicker, particularly on the left.

Painful lack of invention. That is definitely where the focus should be in the transfer window, we can manage with what we have elsewhere for now, but lack of creativity will absolutely drag us down.

Wouldnt say dross yet. In all competitions but key month coming up then january window.
September and October were about as bad as Spurs have been in a very long time, but, yeah. My point is kinda that we've recovered it before the crash. As you say, big matches coming up. In reality, a year ago we were top of the league...so we know how quickly it can fall apart.

Underlying stats confirm the eye test. Very comfortable performance in which we bossed the game on both ends. CONTE :contekiss:

I think we have been conveniently handed a nice run of fixtures to ease Conte in but where we get found out is against the top 8 of the league.

Any team that combines a bit of technical quality and can press with pace gives us real trouble. We saw that even against a much weakened Leeds team.

United couldn't buy a win yet pumped us 3 nil at a canter. Woolwich blew us away in 30 mins. Yes these were both under Nuno but our players' technical limitations are only really exposed when teams take the game to us as the better sides do.

That's why the Liverpool game will be fascinating. Will Conte have done enough by then to get this sorry bunch ready ti compete with a proper team?

Good all round solid performance. Brentford have caused some of the so called “ bigger teams” all sorts of problems this season so to make them look so ineffective must be a big positive. Just shows what a difference it makes when players know what is expected of them.
