For Lennon there was Routledge. Dawson and Reid came as a package. Walker and Naughton. Even Defoe was after we’d tried and got nowhere with Zamora for 6 months.
At subs point we stopped investing in youth in bulk, and I think that’s hindered us.

Then again: Holtby, Siggurdson, Lamela, Jansen, Sanchez, Bergwijn, N'jie, N'koudou, Foyth, blah blah..... All 22 or under at time of signing. Even the likes of Chadli (23), Chirices (23), Aurier (24), Paulinho (24), Wanyama (24).
Again, I don't think there's a steadfast rule/pattern to be found........ The market was different and we were just better at scouting IMO... That and the fact that we were in a better position to offer game-time for players to develop (i.e. the upside of being a so-called stepping stone club).
