Yeah, that’s what I meant when I said, I only think we’d be interested if we sold Kane. We aren’t going to pay 55-60m for a pure striker/9 while Kane’s still here.

But we really should at least look at getting someone who can play 9 and wide striker as Conte’s system really depends heavily on a fulcrum type up there, and Son is hopeless with his back to goal.
How much would Embolo cost? He'd be decent cover for Kane

I’ll never quite fathom why we left the model of picking up talent from below and developing them. So much of our development over a good decade and a half came about because we were getting this policy more right than wrong.
Walker, Rose, Trippier, Bale, Davies, Dele..

Modric, Berbatov, BAE, Hugo, Eriksen, Jan, Toby, Son, Dier

It was never fully one or the other and, Bale aside, the stars (highlighted) came from abroad.

Absolutely they did. However, I’d argue that Dier, Eriksen, Son and Modric still tick the box of investing in youth despite higher profiles and values, and who the fuck had ever heard of Ekotto, The 22 yearold left back from Lens…

Hugo, Berbatov and the Belgian centre backs very much established players.

I wouldn’t suggest we look, or ever did look, at lower leagues solely, of course there needs to be a blend, but bringing in talent from abroad hasn’t stopped at all (depending on how lovely one uses the term talent 😂) but since Dele the only young player we’ve brought in off the back of impressing in the football league is Clarke, which has yet to pan out for a variety of reasons.

At the same time as getting Carrick, we brought in Davis who didn’t work out. For Lennon there was Routledge. Dawson and Reid came as a package. Walker and Naughton. Even Defoe was after we’d tried and got nowhere with Zamora for 6 months.

At subs point we stopped investing in youth in bulk, and I think that’s hindered us.

As far as I could tell, the OG point was about buying domestic talent from below; not age.

Then again: Holtby, Siggurdson, Lamela, Jansen, Sanchez, Bergwijn, N'jie, N'koudou, Foyth, blah blah..... All 22 or under at time of signing. Even the likes of Chadli (23), Chirices (23), Aurier (24), Paulinho (24), Wanyama (24).

Again, I don't think there's a steadfast rule/pattern to be found........ The market was different and we were just better at scouting IMO... That and the fact that we were in a better position to offer game-time for players to develop (i.e. the upside of being a so-called stepping stone club).

lol @ Hakimi 'links' - if by some miracle he became available you think we'd spend that kind of money on a RWB?

If we did I bet people will still mumble that Levy hasn't backed Conte.

Well we won’t find out that way , we are not signing him. Levy will have to shaft Conte on a couple of realistic targets. Pretty decent chance of that happening if history teaches us anything
