If we sign him as a wingback I expect him to want as much time one the ball as possible, which will choke out Deki as a creative output.

I blame Totti.
The thing about McKennie that I could see working well with a Conte system is he's really good on set pieces and on crosses into the box.
If we get some wingbacks that can actually make those plays, McKennie makes really smart runs and can finish. He has a scoring touch.
To be clear, he's not creative. He's not Eriksen at all. But he can finish and he gets into scoring positions.
