This guy wrote a thesis " Set pieces: the 15-goal striker " ..... basically if you can utilise the set pieces its like signing an additional striker , that many more goals could could equate to circa 10-12 points a season , draws into win and loses in draws , every extra pint or % that gets us victory and really actually try to push shitty n varpool, closing that gap, not sure we will really catch them completely but defo close that gap considerably especially when you factor in the player additions on top.
He is a "Moneyball man"

So if Lewis Hamilton goes into the new F1 season in a shittier car than the year before; because he's a boss driver he still stands just as much chance of winning the title?

Quality of players is a fundamental component.... Odd to think otherwise tbh.
Bad example. This is not F1. This is a team sport where player shortcomings can be covered by proper tactics, training, and system. There are many more intangibles than in F1, where a car's horsepower is a car's horsepower and that basically limits performance. In football a Dier, a Davies, a Victor Moses can perform much better in a proper structure that elevates their strengths and covers for their weaknesses. Can't do that to the same extent in F1.

Team = Car
Players = Components
Manager = Driver.

Every component has a capacity.

Analogy works just fine for the purpose of my point: Quality of players is paramount at the very highest level.

I think the point that Get in! Get in! was making is that players are not absolutes. This isn’t fifa where you look at an individuals skill and boom the eleven players with the highest total score wins.

Players are tools to perform jobs or roles within the team. The best team is that which has the players best suited to carry out an effective strategy on a game by game basis. 11 players can look amazing in one strategy and ordinary in another.

Player quality is obviously not irrelevant but the quality can only be assessed within a particular system.

In your head of course it does. But in reality it really doesn't, I'm afraid. As I mentioned in my original post, no one would have given us a snowball's chance in hell looking at our squad, but with the proper system in place we were the 2nd best team in the PL in the final third of the season.

So it was a case where the Components (Players) made for a much better Car (Team) than their quality belied.

Missed out is a bit of a misnomer. Would he have wanted to join us to sit on the bench? With Brentford he will get regular playing time. That's the problem with where we're at right now: we have enough quality across all positions that any such prospect would rather go to a lesser team, where he would be guaranteed minutes. And if we want to sign such players, we'd have to pay them a heck of a lot more than what we would be willing to. So I'm afraid that category of signing may be much more difficult moving forward. We'll either have to get them really young, or when they are established and for a larger fee.

Spence is same age and level.

Let that sink in

I'm not discounting the importance of good management; but the implication that player quality isn't a fundamental difference maker at the highest level is lunacy.

If you're talking about League 1 team players vs world 11, of course it is. But we're talking about much smaller gaps in quality here. And we're not talking about all players being a substantial drop in quality. Just a handful, which the rest of the players can cover in a system that is focused on minimizing the lesser quality players' shortcomings.

We were the 2nd best for a really short period. We have no idea whether that would've been the case across an entire season. Lack of quality tends to catch up with you in that regard, Tuchel is a top coach and Chelsea are very well organized, but their lack of quality in certain areas compared to Liverpool & City saw them drop off over an entire season.

I get the point you're making but quality matters. Liverpool got to where they are by adding top quality in VVD & Alisson. City win it every year because they always add top quality, match deciding players season in, season out.

Talk of Kante’s demise is greatly exaggerated. Wishful thinking.

His best performances for Chelsea were probably a bit further forward under Sarri but he has been very consistent. Like Pogba, he’s also consistently banged for France. Played really well against Denmark recently.

The guy is far better technically than his boring run machine reputation suggests. And his anticipation will only get better with age.

He’ll be capable of playing 30-35 games a season at the highest level for another 2/3 years.

Plus he’s a legend who drives a shit car.
And paid every penny he owed to the UK tax man, unlike nearly everyone running to be leader of the Tory party. He's far too decent to play for Chelsea. I'm yellow carding myself for being kindly disposed to a Chav and not saying this in the laugh at Chavs thread.
