Player Pape Sarr

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Conte brought Sarr into the team at 20...

People seriously saying he's mistreated him?

Bet if you ask Sarr, he's super fucking grateful for the opportunity at such a young age.

Skipp was Spurs best CM in the first half of last season (after a full season in Championship, the 6th best league in Europe) before getting an injury which he'd recovered from months ago.

Sarr has spent 2 seasons in French top league so, again, loads of experience.

Both of them young but already more than enough experience to be played.

So the better question is why was Conte not rotating the other CM's - which helps prevent tiredness and helps prevent injuries from tired muscles, ensures everyone keeps all of them match fit etc.

Why did Conte only play them after two are injured, the other suspended ?

No need for gratitude, both players had already proved they were ready to play if allowed to. Problem was a coach playing a small number of players -every 3 or 4 days which is well known to physios as having high risk of causing injuries,

Sarr and Skipp behind a top class creative midfielder......

Something to look forward to

No, he really wasn't, he's just an academy player so he gets overhyped to a silly degree, before people will eventually turn on him like they did on Winks.

Our first team choice in the first half of last season was Hojbjerg and Skipp, and as I say Skipp looked better than Hojbjerg, covering a lot of ground as well as putting in all the tackles, interceptions etc.

Personal choice, but Skipp looked better (because he seemed to cover more of the pitch and have a wider range of skills) than Hojbjerg. They are not a natural fit together as both looked better in defensive duties (ironically Hojbjerg plays a little further forward for Denmark, has more shots on goal and looks a better player, but he's not been played there for Spurs.).

Sarr looks like a veteran already. Looks genuine quality.

Now a cheeky bid for Onana if Everton get relegated and these 2 units in midfield behind a creative midfielder and two decent wingers.

Skipp had worse numbers than Hojbjerg back then in pretty much every stat, but people have very strong biases, both against Hojbjerg and for Skipp. I don't think he did particularly poorly, but I don't think he really stood out to anyone but Spurs fans who really wanted him to stand out.

He really was.

The competition for CM wasn't high as we had been absolutely dreadful the year before, so seeing an actually capable CM probably skewed our perception of what an average CM looks like.

But he was still very good prior to his injury and easily our best CM. Remember, these were nuno days.

Rather than 'I don't think ..... stood out' its probably more accurate to say 'IMO he didn't stand out for me' ....... and that would be correct.

Other fans looked at Skipp and said 'wow he's an upgrade on what we had playing in midfield before'

That is football. Lots of different opinions ..... and we are all entitled to them!

Only if he becomes shit.
He doesn't need to become shit, he just needs to get 2-3 years older, and the "future Spurs captain" takes will become "what does he even do?" and "he only passes sideways", etc. We've seen it happen before. I hope he kicks on, but he needs to improve before he becomes even mid-table Premier League standard.

This is daft. What has Sarr’s age got to do with things? Why should he be grateful for a chance if he is good enough. Conte has left him out of many match day squads this season. The two best players on the pitch yesterday were forced on Conte. It calls into question his judgement that Sarr hasn’t played more this season as last night’s performance shows. He was the only one in the middle with anything about him against Woolwich as well before being left out again. Conte seems to play players on reputation alone

It’s an elite sport. If a player truly wants to challenge for the top prizes, they have to be relentless in their pursuit of excellence. Any whiff of less and fans will be on them and rightly so.*

They’re paid a fortune for what they do and fans pay to watch. This isn’t a ‘well done for trying, Timmy, your crepe paper imitation stain glass window art gets a 5/10’ in primary school situation. Passengers like Winks won’t be tolerated and neither will Skipp if he follows that same path.

Fortunately, his injury doesn’t appear to have affected him in the same way that Winks’ injury did. Winks returned and was mostly sub-standard thereafter. Skipp is currently much the better of the two and a valuable squad player.

* This goes for everybody from Levy down. Elite means doing the best and expecting criticism for anything less. Nobody wins the top prizes without relentless pressure from themselves and others.
