Manager Antonio Conte

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Genuinely hopeless post.

He's played one game.

"Should never have been signed at all" but also references "long term" later in the post.

That isn't how it works. This is what you need to understand.

The squad isn't built for a manager if you have a DOF. That is the exact mistake that the club made for years before appointing Paratici. When you have a DOF they build the squad and then bring managers to work with it.

You may have noticed the praise that Brighton get for being able to bring in De Zerbi after Potter or being able to lose Bissouma and Drossard without feeling it. It's because they don't operate in the dinosaur understanding of football management that your post displayed.

Porro (like Udogie and Spence) is a squad purchase, not a manager purchase. He's not going to be converted into a full-back because it would be incredibly stupid to buy the best RWB available on the market and one of the best in the world, then change his position.

As for saying it's terrible recruitment after 1 game...Have a word with yourself.
I’m not writing him off after 1 game. He was a bad signing after 0 games but I still hope he’s a success.

I appreciate what you’re saying about the director of football model. I agree that this should be the benefit. My feeling is that Porro is only a 45m player as a wing back. In a back 4 I think he’s not strong enough defensively. He’d have to have insane numbers going forward to be worth the trade off.

If he’s not converted to a fullback as you confidently suggest then every manager we hire will be told they have to play 3 at the back. That narrows the list of managers we can go for. Presumably you think Poch is dead in the water because he plays 4atb. The number of high quality managers who want to play 3 is not great… seems to me if you want to buy players for a system then you buy them for a system with lots of close siblings… 433 and 4231… very similar… 3atb, not so much.

They gall the bladder doh.

Just so I understand, have you already written off Porro?
Nope. I thought he would be a bad signing because we are likely to move to a back 4 next season.

Maybe we won’t in which case GREAT planning.

But I think there’s a good chance we will. And then Porro is not a 45m player.

We could have spent the money on a centreback or creative midfielder who can play in any formation.

1. That's because he is a wing-back. He played in a back 4 defensively at Sporting because the manager's system had flexibility between formations.

2. If Poch is really a top-class coach, he will be able to have the flexibility in his system to have adaptable formations.

3. Pep is currently playing a system with 3 atb. Every high-quality manager has the ability to adapt their system to match up against and use the benefits of most formations. There are teams all over Europe having success with defensive wingers or attacking wing backs.

4. See above for Pep but also watch Brighton or go back and watch Tuchel.

He was absolutely a manager purchase. Can’t remember where but Conté talked about Porro being a season changer.
There’s absolutely no way I believe that Danny Boy would pay 4X the purchase price of a player sold 5 months previous, loan out (and probably subsidize) his home-grown club purchase and mutually terminate another’s contract with millions on it unless his arm was being twisted real hard.

You can't remember because it didn't happen.

managers never speak about players before they sign and it was Stellini that gave quotes about Porro since he arrived because Conte was having his insides removed.
Stellini said he's a good player, said nothing about game-changer.

Paratici also said very very positive things about Porro after the window and also spoke about wathcing him for a long time.

Who did Levy pay 4x the purchase price of after 5 months?
