But was he?

With due respect, you absolutely did call it right but I don’t think there’s such a thing as can’t miss when you’re talking about a guy who has never played above Chinese Super League standard except for one year in Turkey.
I think we’d both agree that we should extend our net further than Italy, France and Iberia (which seem to be our only source of targets) but transition from lower leagues is even harder to predict and we don’t seem to predict well regardless of where we recruit from.
If we wait too long, we’ll get out-bid or out- ‘branded’ by bigger clubs. If we jump in too early, we as likely as not to be ‘N’Jie’d’. Having said that, there are a number of clubs in a similar position, like Dortmund, who seem to do it far better than we do.
Do you know why it wasn't the risk you think . The year in Turkey you COULD see it. The anticipation and athleticism against oponents some of who were still good enough to do a job in this country. Everything is a risk and there are no sure bets but the lad was a young Korean with all the discipline and good attitude that culture mandates he was as close to sure as you can get.

Look at the player holistically and be less hung up on the league. I said this before to make it in the EPL you need technique physicality and good speed. A player with all three then it's a matter of coaching and attitude. I never saw N'jie but I had read and seen enough of the Korean to be sure. With Son in the team Spurs had an inside line it's a shocking failure.

Gallardo/Pochettino

N'dicka, Maddison, Scott ,Raya, Diaby

This fixes almost all our most pressing problems let's keep repeating it this till the clowns running the club get it.

Yes!

As long as the important outs happen.

Obviously changes if Kane goes but even then Diaby, Richy, Kulu with Maddison pulling the strings that Kane does...

I'd be just as happy with Amorim as Poch/Gallardo as well. Probably would prefer Amorim

This season was such a shame as we were one top CCB away from having a very competitive team.

Look at how Van Dijk transformed Liverpool. We needed that last summer of this June. We’d still be in both cups and comfortably 4th.

It wasn't just VVD though, they also had Matip, TAA, Robertson, Fabhino, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Mane, Salah, Firminho.

VVD was like the missing single piece. It's not like a CB was going to be our one missing piece, we'd still another 7 or 8 missing pieces.

Honest question.

If we were to get a progressive, high pressing manager, would it be ok if we sold Kane (and Son) and got a duo of Kolo Muani and Thuram (for example)? They wouldn't replace his goals or creativity, but they would be pressing machines, and we could have a system close to that of 2017 when the forwards kept interchanging places with each-other to confuse the opposition.

I really don't think having a top CCB would've changed all that much for us this season. It's definitely an issue, but it's one of many. It would've just been papering over the cracks, which we've been doing for the last 4 years.

At this stage I just want to rip the band aid off and start the rebuild properly, even if it means missing top 4 for a season or two. This cycle of addressing one weakness each summer just has us going around in circles.

Honest question.

Kane wil a big loss but IMO Son is easily upgradable. It's not like he's been scoring 23 goals every season, and he brings so little outside of goals. I'm just so sick of watching players like Ademola Lookman, Pedro Neto, fucking Demaray Grey beating people 1v1, holding up the ball etc. while Son only has that quick stepver shot.

Can't even compare him to Kulu never mind someone like Vinicius Jr. or other truly world class wingers.

Kane will surely be a big loss, no denying that, however a change in system might be what we need, and his departure, although painful, could be a blessing in disguise.

If we could form a lineup like this with the Kane money I wouldn't call it bad business in the slightest:

Raya (20M)

Pedro Porro - Romero - Laporte (25M) - Udogie
Skipp - Bissouma
Richarlison - Kulusevski - Marcus Thuram (0)
Jonathan David (40M)

Forster
Spence
Rodon
Davies
Reguilon
Bentancur
Sarr
Gil
Alex Scott
Danjuma (or a replacement like him)

The numbers in brackets are the estimated costs. The old guard (Hugo, Sanchez, Dier, Kane, Son, Hojbjerg) all gone. It could be a long, but interesting process.

Fair points.

Who are the players we can realistically buy this summer to help us rebuild?

I am seeing some names thrown around that are not realistic unless we get top 4, which is a long shot.

We already need 1 maybe 2 attackers (Lucas & Danjuma out, no existing CAM in the squad.... Let alone any cover for said position)....... If Son & Kane go too, that's potentially 4 needed........ That's a whole lot of bedding in and goals to compensate for.

Hopefully Kane stays and allows for a smoother transition, but if not; we're probably wise to keep Sonny and hope a new gaffa freshens him up a bit.

Alex Scott can be that CAM, and we also have Gil to come back again. That leaves 2 more signings needed. I think Thuram is a no-brainer this window. He's a free transfer, and can play both as a LW and a striker. He has very high energy and is good at pressing. Has scored 12 goals this season as well. Then as a striker the dream for me would be Kolo Muani, however it might be hard to take him since Liverpool also seem to like him. Kolo Muani can play all 3 positions (which will come in handy in the other point) and is extremely technical. Jo David (who I've listed in the line-up) is also an extremely good player. Then you have options like Vlahovic etc. who are more on the mould of Kane, although I wouldn't be as much in favour of signing that kind of striker, simply because we can't replace Kane like for like, it's impossible since there's no one better than him.

I don't see a future for Sonny, simply because he doesn't have it in his legs to press anymore. Love him, but I think it was time to part ways. It's a big mystery if anyone would take him though, although his wages are very low for a player of his reputation.

The future doesn't entail Richy on the RW.

Richy is decent as a RW, and he can swap positions with the other 3, for example he can go as a shadow striker in some scenarios while Kulusevski goes to the RW, or he can swap with Kolo Muani and go forward while KM goes as a LW etc.

Son is reportedly on £192kpw..... No club below us can afford that and none above are likely to want him..... Especially if we want a half-decent trf fee.

Yeh, I'm not so sure that stands to get much out of Richy..... Either you play him as a bulldozing front man and let him cause havoc in the box or a pressing/aggressive LWer like he was at Everton.

...Re: Rich: I thought his best bet here was to be one of the 2 STs in a 352.

We never got a sniff of that though. If we're gonna play 4321, I fear we've just bought a very expensive grafter.

According to multiple links we couldn't persuade half a dozen CB's to move to Spurs - and most didn't move at all, only Bremer and he didn't want to leave Italy for personal reasons. The top CB imo would be Skriniar but he was running his contract down to join PSG this summer.

The one CB who we could have signed was Kim Min- jae from Fenerbahce - but I'd imagine signing him after one season in Turkey after a few years in China (whose league is low level) has might have seemed a risk, especially to Conte given he didn't accept Spence after 2 seasons in Championship (arguably 5th/6th best league in europe after PL, Germany, France, Italy).

So I don't think a top CB last summer was available - and hence the loan of Lenglet as best alternative allowing us to buy this summer. An inevitable compromise if a CB was not available.
