So we have basically got Maddison for £28m.

Leicester's pants pulled right down

Well first of all assurances from Levy aren't worth much, secondly as I said previously Maddison should use his brain, if he has come here not considering that Kane being sold is not a possibility, he's a fool.

Tottenham risk ‘pissing off’ new signing James Maddison should they decide to sell Harry Kane this summer, according to Alan Shearer.

The England skipper is said to be giving serious consideration to finally leaving his boyhood club amid concrete interest from Bayern Munich.

An opening offer of €70million was immediately rejected by Spurs on Tuesday but the German champions are expected to return with an improved bid imminently.

Kane has just 12 months left on his current contract and is in a strong bargaining position with Daniel Levy who would prefer not to sell the club’s talisman to a Premier League rival.

While resolving Kane’s future remains the No.1 priority, Spurs are making progress with their own summer recruitment drive.

The signing of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was confirmed yesterday, while Maddison’s arrival from Leicester is imminent after a £40m agreement was struck.

Shearer, however, believes Maddison would be questioning his decision to join the north London club should he be denied the opportunity to play alongside is international teammate.

‘My first thought when hearing about Bayern’s bid for Harry shot in the direction of James Maddison, who has been the subject of negotiations between Spurs and Leicester City, his present club,’ Shearer told The Athletic.

‘If I was Maddison, once I’d got personal terms out of the way, the first thing I’d be asking of Tottenham is assurances that Kane isn’t leaving. Imagine how pissed off you’d be if you’d pictured yourself creating chances for one of the world’s best finishers and then, bang — he’s gone.’

On the conundrum facing Spurs and Levy, meanwhile, Shearer added: ‘Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, has a reputation in the game as a tough negotiator but this summer represents a crossroads.

‘Tying Harry down to a six-year contract in 2018 was a genius piece of business because it gave the club huge protection when City and others came calling, but it presents them with a dilemma now. They could sell him for a decent fee or hold their nerve, gamble on him agreeing new terms and risk him leaving for nothing in a year.

‘Levy is not somebody I know personally, but I would be surprised if he was willing to let Harry join another Premier League club, unless it was for ridiculous money (these things are relative) and it would kill him to let him go for nothing, particularly when a replacement would likely cost a fortune and inevitably be inferior.

‘Even the biggest clubs have to sell at some point, whether to reinvest or refresh, but gauging the right moment is fraught. And without Kane, Spurs are toothless.’

Thing I like most about the Maddison signing is not necessarily just what he adds to the team, but what it says about our status.

Although we're out of Europe and have a trophy record as envious as a stinking turd, he still chose us.

Spurs will always be Spurs. The mighty, illustrious Spurs.
I reckon a lot of clubs envy how our pulling power is still so strong.

It's about fucking time we signed a top drawer footballer at his peak. Gave our fans a real buzz. Now let's use our clout, financial or otherwise, and bring in a few more worthy of representing this historic and glamorous football club.

The Lenglet situation is a curious one.

Assessing him has nothing to do with scouting. He's been our player for a year, so we know all about his strengths & weaknesses, any underlying injuries, & his character. We're assessing a known quantity, not the informed guesswork of analytics, scouting reports, football grapevine.

Lenglet seems to be a good professional, who trains & prepares well (IIRC Conte said as much). He's comfortable on the ball, and likely would be even better with the attacking options Ange's tactics provide. So, in possession, he's a good option.

But defensively we can all see his vulnerabilty on the turn. When he's exposed 1v1 I never rate his chances.

Also, his Barca salary is ridiculous, similar to our top earners. So the cheap transfer fee is a given. The issue is finding a solution to his wages, which may involve a signing fee as big as the mooted £5m transfer fee, to persuade him eg to halve his wages down to around c£80-100k.

That's an expensive total package for a squad CB. Also, if say Romero & flashy new signing CB (Tapsoba, VDV2) are our first choices, in a season where we have far fewer games, will Lenglet be prepared to sit on the bench for weeks or months, given his French international & Barca history?

I'd wait until we unload Dier, Japhet, Sanchez, Rodon etc. And even then, I'd prefer a younger CB option, on a cheaper salary, with a high ceiling.
Personally I wouldn't bother buying another.
I think we should give Dorrington a chance.

Romero can't be relied on to play every game of the season, between Argentina, injuries and suspensions he'll miss close to 10 games.

Let's say we get Tapsoba and van de Ven.

You then have an option for Tosin.

Dorrington should be next in line.

But let's not get greedy, we aren't selling all of Dier, Sanchez, Rodon, and Tanganga in one window. This leaves Dorrington to go out on loan for this year. We make do with probably Dier or Sanchez as 4th choice. In an emergency Davies or Royal as 5th choice.

And I’m so fucking happy we are signing Maddison. Really feel it can be a game changer for us. Brilliant midfielder and offers something completely different to what we have. Brilliant deal as well
Touch wood, we'll be replacing something we've been missing since Eriksen left (in fact, since before that considering he went to shit after mentally checking out).

Oh, and a direct free kick threat.

Disagree. Depends how he looks at earning over his career and the point at which he gets it. Usually selling players on, it's the bumper salaries that are the issue, not the transfer fee, it's likely the reason Le Celso and Tanguy are still here. They wont take a pay cut, and nobody can afford their wages and teams aren't keen to cause a mutiny within their squad. It basically locks us into a player we want rid of.

We can likely pay him less over the course of his contract by paying a lump up front, also he will then likely get first team football, rather than sitting on the bench, or getting loaned here there and everywhere from Barca.

28 isn't super young but fit players go on for much longer than they ever did (Perisic = 34) and with the U.S. and Saudi being a new outlet for players, paying decent fee and wages it's less of a risk.

He's far from my first choice but I can see it working if we were to get him for a very low price.

No, you are missing the point and making very basic logical mistake. It is not about agreement or disagreement, it is about numbers.

As I said in the first place - 1 dollar cost is 1 dollar cost. Either if we pay it for transfer fee, salary or sign up fee. It does not matter too much when you will pay it. It might make it easier that a new club would take him off our hands but that is also the case when for example we pay him higher salaries but at the end of it will agree to compensate part of the salaries in order for transfer to be completed.

Also, can you explain your statement "also he will then likely get first team football, rather than sitting on the bench" - I mean, that should be based on his ability not about how the transfer is structured ?!?! And that is basically what I am saying - in playing wise, he has proven he is not fast nor mobile enough. So I feel that he could maybe be a last resort option but not a starting CB for us. If we want to be a CL club, that is.

It is true, that Saudis are somewhat of an option, but that is also the case now if we wants to go. And even for Saudis, 28 yo Lenglet is worth more than 31 yo Lenglet. I mean, just look the example of Koulibali - year ago Chelsea purchased him for 38 mil. Now he left to Saudiland for 23 mil EUR. That is LOSS from the flip of 15 mil + salary cost paid over the year. Not profit.

So your points make very little sense and I do not see any real life scenarios supporting that line of thinking. We should go for players with upside and ability to improve. Not for player that we tested, found out to have massive flaws and who is getting close to 30 in age.

Tuning in to watch Sky's tears. There is so much wrong with what is spoken here.

remember when we went to their place after the take over? conceded the first goal and sky commentators were absolutely jizzing all over the mics? Ended up getting spanked.

Let's hope Maddison can help us deliver another spanking.

Yeah but who wants to be pessimistic?

it’s still June we’ve got two (of 5?) deals over the line. By all accounts/reporting we’re looking at bringing in 2 CBs and talking to Tapsoba and VDV.

Let’s enjoy the summer!
Wasnt saying the guy is right at all.

It’s 2 great signings so far.

Personally going to wait til the end of the window to judge anything and especially when we see what our CBs look like when the window closes
