Emersons best games for us last season were when he came central in the middle of the pitch.

If anything, he's best suited to being an inverted full back more than probably anyone in our squad.

Porro however, seems a disastrous fit. I've made my feelings clear of not wanting to go ahead with Porro permanently but looks like it's happening
I mean I watched every game and don’t recall him ever playing as any sort of inverted full back. He’s better deep, because he has no technical ability to impact the game in the final 3rd.

Regardless, even if they were his best games, he just isn’t good enough for a top club.

This argument gives me flashbacks to last summer where Dier was good in a CB3 because he had a purple patch and we needed a LCB instead.

Dier is very very limited, so is Emerson. It absolutely cannot be our plan to play this guy as a starting RB next season, and to refer back to the original post I quoted - the prospect of him being “one of our best players” will only happen if we’re mid-table.

He played as a more inverted full back (as opposed to running down the wing and overlapping) against both West Ham and Chelsea.

I'd much rather go into the season with Emerson at full back than Porro.

Wouldn't that have required Harry's brother to be able to read?

And I do believe that line is about Jan Vertonghen, not Harry Kane?!

Let's make a friendly bet then. If it transpires that the club had a one year option remaining in his contract, I pay £20 to a charity of your choice. If not, you do the same?

Maybe we won't find out the answer to that bet, but if we do...up for it?
Nope.
I donate loads of goods and clothes to charity but not cash.

I’ve read this a lot and I strongly strongly disagree.

He’s ok defensively, no quibble there. But the prospect of a player so limited technically as Royal playing as an inverted full back should frighten every Tottenham fan.

Do we really want him on the ball in the centre of the pitch? Give me a technician like Porro there all day, even if he isn’t perfect.

I don’t think we can assume any sort of system is going to make up for the lack of technical excellent that Royal has. This is a still a professional footballer who struggles to get the ball off the ground when crossing it.

He's more than okay defensively, he's improved his 1on1 defending massively - if you remember he completely shut down Grealish.

I don't think his technical ability is that bad, it's his decision making and crossing which has a lot to be desired, I agree that moving in in field isn't idea but he's a far better player when he doesn't have to play in those forward areas.

Porro is just a purely wing back, even as a full back his 1 on 1 defending is poor and his positioning needs work, he may have the technical ability to play in field but he does his best work on the wing and in the final 3rd.

Oooh a late night "we were/weren't Maddison's last resort" cunt off.

So, to recap, he is either stupid enough to prefer a mid table club to the richest club in the world and CL football or sad enough to only have us as an option....

Newcastle had a choice - Tonali or push for Maddison who had already expressed a preference for Spurs and London rather than Newcastle.

Newcastle are NOT the richest club in the world - far from it. Based upon last year's figures their turnover is about 1/3rd of Spurs turnover. And their first CL football in about 20 years - or actually first european football in that time - so maybe Maddison and advisors don't believe Newcastle will outperform Spurs, Liverpool and Chelsea and maybe others to maintain a CL spot ? Book makers will almost certainly agree.

One of their joint owners is very rich, the other (Staverly) may be declared bankrupt shortly, or may need to do some deals to avoid it.
