That’s why we need another left back. Don’t think Davies or Sess are good enough. Both an attacking and defensive full back for each side.
I'd keep Davies to be fair, with Udogie as the main LB. Davies can cover multiple positions, and I think he'd accept a role of being back up.

If we go in for Van de Ven then he can also cover LB. Paramount is 2 new CB's in my opinion, then a winger, although I think Gil can have a good season if given a chance.

Emersons best games for us last season were when he came central in the middle of the pitch.

If anything, he's best suited to being an inverted full back more than probably anyone in our squad.

Porro however, seems a disastrous fit. I've made my feelings clear of not wanting to go ahead with Porro permanently but looks like it's happening

Don’t think we can judge Porro based on the chaos we threw him into.

Fully expecting him to work really well with Ange.

Even as the inverted FB role with playmaker responsibility in the buildup. He’s effective on the wing because he can cross it and shoot. No reason it couldnt translate

... And their first CL football in about 20 years - or actually first european football in that time - so maybe Maddison and advisors don't believe Newcastle will outperform Spurs, Liverpool and Chelsea and maybe others to maintain a CL spot ? Book makers will almost certainly agree.
I expect you probably meant longer term than just next season, but thought I'd look on Oddschecker to see what the bookies think about next season. Most bookies currently have the following as top 4, in this order, all odds-on:

City
Dippers
Woolwich
Man U

Then it's Newcastle and Chavs on a out 6/4 or shorter, with us 7th at about 3/1 to finish top 4.

Must say i'm a little disappointed by that. I know they don't know everything etc, but on long term events like this they're normally not too far off the mark on average, and I'd have thought that anyone looking objectively might consider that a). the Geordies had a bit of luck last year with so many other sides having an off season, and b). Chavs still still a right mess of a squad which you might expect it to take Poch some time to get the best out of. I wonder how much impact a big CB signing would have on the bookies' opinions...

Oh well, fuck 'em, let's prove 'em wrong! COYS!

Maddison played an 8 at Leicester, but was the one with the license to get forward.

His Celtic system had the 6 do all the dirty work, and collect the ball from the centre halves to move it foward, and then two 8's. One was to get around the pitch and move the ball, pick up space and hound others, the other was to advance more.

I actually think we already have the perfect blend for that. Bentancur and Bissouma are both capable of playing 6 or the first 8. Maddison is the advanced 8. We need another signing in there to cover the 8's. Alex Scott would be my choice. He can play both types of 8, and would be learning off Maddison daily.

Full backs is the issue - Porro and Udogie are more suited to a wing back system, which isn't going to happen. Udogie is youn enough to be trained into it. Porro I think can learn it, but it'll take time. Emerson needs to be kept.

Full backs could be an issue, as we have two potentially excellent wing backs in Porro and Udogie.

IMO Ange may experiment in pre-season with say Porro and Davies as one set of full backs and Udogie and Royal as the other set - in each case one full back is great bombing forward whilst the other is more comfortable in defence.

Both Spence and Sessegnon (albeit seems injury prone still) can play full back as well

So a range of choices to experiment with in pre-season.
