Every single team with someone past their peak like Dier will be linked this summer.

I really, really hope it's true. But, it's probably not, unless the 'Dier is fighting for his place' PR was a price-raising tactic. Would only seem to affect his wages, though, rather than a fee.

Side note: Jesus, I've just seen Dier's missus... Man, he is a lucky, lucky boy.

Yeah see I’m just not seeing it. His touch is ok at best, not liquid like you’d want from someone taking the ball in the positions he’ll plan to.

I find his passing pretty average as well, it’s generally shipping the ball to someone without having any real impact on progressive patterns, and whilst there’s an element of that as an inverted FB he’s going to have to take the ball under pressure in the middle of the park with an awareness of where he’s being pressed from. He’s going to have to play one touch football under pressure and rely on his touch when pressed.

These are not Emerson Royal commodities.

Feels like I’m in the minority on this from the comments, and let’s hope I’m wrong - but I see nothing good coming from Royal playing inverted FB against any team with a decent sort of press.

Disaster waiting to happen for me.
I think he’s as average as you get at this level. He had a wee run of games when he done ok and people took that as he was brilliant when he was just better than his earlier rubbish he was producing. He’s not equipped to play as an inverted full back or an attacking full back. He’s a steady defender and is all heart but that’s not enough to be successful at this level. You can quote me on this,he won’t play before Porro in Ange’s team. Porro has a better touch, better range of passing, good in tight spaces and can cross the ball better than anyone in our squad.

That's true, and you have to go into this kind of approach in the knowledge that not all will work out, however, if you're taking the punt before they make it big then the fees involved are generally small enough that those that don't work out can be flipped for similar fees to what they signed for, and if you do strike gold with even just one of them, then that can more than pay the cost of the failures in the long run.

The likes of Clarke and N'Kouddou that we've had here aren't really a huge problem, it's the Sessegnon and Janssen type transfers that are, they were "punts" to an extent but that wasn't reflected in the fees paid for them.

Sessengon we should have known better as he flunked his EPL audition at Fulham.... Jansen was worth rolling the dice (I think partially, mentally he's not up to it)..... But yeh, there's no reason to not sign a Clarke or an NKoudo (or two) every summer (even if it means loaning them back for another year or two). The way prices are; 1 hit in 5 and it will pay for itself (esp. once you factor in ammortisation and any exit fee; however small).

Agree with what both you and Herclueless Herclueless say above, but I feel that many of the dumber posters on here only see the ones that we 'miss' who then make it big, and see that as reason to criticise. As you say, we should indeed be taking an average of say 2 punts of this nature each year, and we do. So it's irritating when posters say 'we should have got x when he was available before he became so well-known as a top player' etc, as you can only realistically take a few of such punts each season, and you might (and statistically almost certainly will) miss out on the one that makes it to be world class a couple years later. Perhaps once a decade you'll get a Bale, and once every 3-4 years if you're lucky you'll get a first team regular, but it's always going to be an 'educated / scouted scattergun' approach, so it's stupid for anyone to ever criticise the club for missing out on any particular individual who could have been signed on this basis and is now a big star elsewhere.

Emersons best games for us last season were when he came central in the middle of the pitch.

If anything, he's best suited to being an inverted full back more than probably anyone in our squad.

Porro however, seems a disastrous fit. I've made my feelings clear of not wanting to go ahead with Porro permanently but looks like it's happening
No choice on Porro I thought, it's an obligation
