From everything I have seen and read about VdV, he isn't on Saliba's level yet. Saliba went on loan for 2 seasons of senior football in a top league after joining them. Now he has 3 seasons of senior football plus 16 games the season before he went there.

Van de Ven has 1 season of senior football in a top league. He's talented but it could take a season or 2.

You sign players of this level with them knowing they have to fight for it and earn it.

Tapsoba would be the only one that maybe comes in expecting to be 1st choice.
Saliba spent 3 season out on loan in Ligue 1 (in his first season he only played 2 games) while van de Ven has 2 season in the Bundesliga (but was only a regular in the last season).
If, according Romano (among others), Spurs are after either Tapsoba or van de Ven (and that Spurs are willing to let Dier leave) I would presume they see either one as starters this season and not after 2 seasons.

I am almost completely unmoved by the
Solomon signing. I think it is both good and bad. In a way it's a no-brainer, he's free, a pretty good player, if you want to you could sell him for 10-15m next summer after a year of providing solid LW backup. He's a very good dribbler, shuttles past tackles really well, nothing special when it comes to creativity, final
ball. Pretty good shot, works hard out of possession. Hopefully he's better than I think he is. Ultimately, I think he's another 6/10 player in a squad with many of them, and you won't win much with those. (Son is 31yo, Kane 30 and soon out of contract.) Solomon, Rich, Kulu, Gil .. when Son/Kane are finished up we're incredibly mid table.

Sheesh what does Lucas’ replacement have to do with when Kane/Son are finished ?

Solomon is actually an ideal winger for Ange’s 4-3-3

Perceive him as Trossard like, potentially. For free I can handle that.

Though he does sound like (early) Dembele, from your description, who did not bad after coming from Fulham!

He’s a low risk and potentially high reward player, and I’m way okay with that. There are almost no guarantees in football so I think a player strategy needs to include some bigger name, higher performing players and some that you take a risk on.

We aren’t spending a net 200 million this window so it necessarily needs to be a mix of opportunistic buys coupled with a couple of lower cost, high potential ones as well.

Here is the thing, getting this guy free only covers one of the spots vacated by Lucas and Danjuma.

Then there is always the chance that Gil doesn't work with what Ange wants in pre season (even if it would be fucking great if he could).

If Gil shits the bed in pre-season then we can review towards the end of the window, but for now boxes are ticket up top.

Feels good that we can focus solely on CBs for the time being.

I wouldn’t mind this soloman signing if we were to also go after a winger who’s actually going to put pressure on son and Kulu for a starting spot, but I highly doubt we will. Both son and Kulu were poor last season and shouldn’t be guaranteed starters this time around I still feel a “first team” winger is needed not just a backup .

Who did you have in mind?

That'd be my issue with it really.. just think we're left with a lower quality backup than opposition, in a season where Son has turned 31 and is coming off a year of poor performance on an almost weekly basis. Trossard, Jota, Foden, St Maximin, Mudryk/Sterling, Sancho.. a stab at top 6 backup LW. Just don't think Solomon has a particularly high ceiling, he's closer to Nathan Redmond or Andros Townsend than he is Dembele
Son is now officially a year younger according to S.Korean law. Does that mean he’s worth more?

Solomon has better stats than Mydryk at Chelsea and he cost a fortune

I hate the term back up as you say we need challengeRa.

I don’t mind him as a free agent, but why do we need/have so many left wingers? Son, Gill, Perisic, Solomon and possibly Richarlison. One has to go. I assume Gill. Nothing convinced me he’s good for PL.

Richy will go up top eventually, Perisic won't feature much next season I'd bet and will be gone in 2024 at the latest, Gil can play off the right and was doing so before his loan, Son is an unknown quantity for this season. This makes sense as succession planning IMO, if he can provide a threat off the bench he's already doing more than Lucas did last season. For no fee it's hard to see where we have gone wrong here, he will defo be on less money than Lucas was also, he had to be on at least £100k/week and I'd be surprised if Solomon is on more than 80.
