I'd take Roland from Grange Hill ahead of Dier right this moment.
I'd be talking total shit if I said I had heard of Van de Ven until a week ago. Youtube highlights could make Dier look like a world class centre back so I'm not reading much into what's on there.
He looks very quick for his size, he's tall, puts his body on the line and looks like he knows how to play football. Although one big red flag is that he does seem to like a lunge. Which will inevitably result in penalties and red cards in the Premier League.
Ultimately he's young and with the proper guidance could turn out to be a quality player. The issue with this signing is that it's not a signing City, Woolwich, Chelsea or United would make with the view of him starting. Again, we're taking a risk on a relatively unknown player at £30m, which isn't cheap instead of paying £60m on someone who would 100% work out.

They do win trophies & finished 2nd. & are showing intent to turn that 2nd in to 1st. ENIC don’t do trophies or intent on success. We drive to scrape our top 4 trophy every few years. Then support a bonus or pay rise for the chairman.

The issue with him for me is the commitment he always seems to think we come second to Argentina for example. When he is on it you can see how good he is but those days where thin last season.
I'm hoping in a high press forward attacking style he excels like he did at Atlanta. Don't think sitting back and defending suited him at all
