We don't need to wait for things to go wrong, they already have.

We've gon backwards since moving into the new stadium and finished 8th last season and have just appointed an Aussie as Head Coach whilst one of our main rivals appointed Poch.

It's not like we won the Treble a few years back but the fans are acting like it's some sort of disgrace it hasn't been repeated.

We've been starved of success under Levy and ENIC and are now just a banter club for people to poke fun at.

But yeah, we ought to be so fucking grateful.

:nunothumb:

Wait, I was talking about transfers, not the overall feeling of the club.

At this point in time, what would actually make you happier than you are now? Or do you prefer to live in a perpetual state of misery?

We'll sell Hojbjerg, he'll go on to do well at Atletico and the fans who were desperate to see him go will be crying that we sold him. Trippier all over again.

Lots of players who should be moved on before him, but if he wants out and the fee is good, then so be it.
You mean Trippier who was the best RB in the country last season by miles?

I think Hoj has done very well at Spurs but I won't cry if he leaves. I can't think of anybody on this site who is a massive fan.
We will get about £30m because he is a very good footballer.

So why sign anyone? I'm dubious about the quality of our 19/20 year old youngsters. Devine looks good but needs regular football on loan. Is Sarr creative, can he score 7 or 8 a season? Another that would probably benefit in a prem loan. I'm pretty sure Postecoglou will want someone if Hojbjerg goes (and he wants shot of Tanguy)
I'm expecting our young players to get chances. It's all about buying into Ange's methods and I have a hunch the younger ones will do so more readily than the more established ones.

I agree he won’t fit Ange’s system. I just think people slate him because it’s Hojbjerg. He’s not the worst midfielder we have, but made out to be a horrific player.

He is a very good player, he wouldn’t have interest other wise. He is basically a lesser Declan Rice, he is a leader whose best work is done off the ball but has some limitations on the ball. Problem is if you are trying to build a game around ball domination you blunt what he gives you.

He could be a really good Simeone player, I just don’t see where he fits in with Ange.

I don't see the logic of PEH being sold but Ndombele being given another chance.

PEH is fit, and a professional, and there are obvious doubts about NDombele in both respects that he would need to overcome.

But NDombele is a player who is confident on the ball, who turns positively and looks to be aggressive going forward. This is, from all the evidence, exactly what NDombele wants in a midfielder. PEH did what was asked of him for sure by Jose and Conte, which involved a whole lot of bouncing the ball from the central defenders straight back to them. He and Dier practically dug a groove in the pitch from their passing. And it's fair to think that maybe he's just not the right style of player going forward.

Well, when you sign 20 cheapos to every 3 expensive you are going to have a considerably better track record with cheap signings than expensive ones.

Okay, let's run through a quick scenario.

You buy three lower cost players for 30 million or less (I can't believe that's a lower cost now apparently) for a total of 90 million and you have a hit rate of 33%, where one of the three is a real standout and a great deal.

You buy two 70 million pound players for a total of 140 million and you have a 50% hit rate, ones great and ones a dud.

You act like it's a bad thing but the first option actually nets you the same amount of additive players to your team and financially you're in a better position both in terms of the transfer fee and likely in weekly wages.

Best outcome for everyone.

Let’s not fuck this up

Actually depends upon who we can get to join as his replacements as his departure would leave us with Bentancur (out injured until November ?), Bissouma, Skipp, Sarr and White : too few in number to play a 3 in midfield if that is way Ang wants.

Hojbjerg has critics but is hardworking and rarely injured etc. For the Denmark team he is played further forward and look a whole lot better player, so its been Mourhino/Conte's decision to play him the way he has been.

Nonetheless I'd be happy to see a new midfield player who is more creative but still defensively sound come in to join that group. Still not sure if Maddison will be played as the most forward of the 3 CM's or not and that might dictate what sort of CM we bring in to replace Hojbjerg.

Nah nah nah nah nah, I'm not having that.

We've signed enough expensive players for 1 to be a bonfire success. Name 1.

The fee is irrelevant. Haaland cost less on paper than either of Richarlison or Ndombele.
You're getting too obsessed with the headline, but you need to read the context as well. The signings we make are signed to fit in our wage structure. That's the real spending chart to look at.
For us to get players in our wage structure, they lack experience and sometimes even realised talent.

Perisic for example was free, but is 100% better at everything than Sessegnon who cost £30,000,000
We need to define first what expensive signing for Spurs is

Pre 2012 - 20m>
Pre 2017 - 30m>
Post 2017 - 40m>

If we go by those metric cheap signings significantly outnumber expensive ones by at least 3 to 20 since 2001.

Selling Hojbjerg is fine but we need a high quality replacement. He has played almost every game for 3 years and the other midfielders are either recovering from major injuries or kids. I think he’s made almost 150 appearances for us in 3 seasons which is something to consider when you look at the recent injury records of Bentancur, Bissouma and Skipp.

We’d have to get a pretty big fee for Hojbjerg to be able to afford the kind of replacement we need. If we are going to play 433 then the remaining midfielders we’d have are not enough. Paulinha from Fulham would be perfect but I think he’s beyond our price range.
