if it wasnt for ndombele, the sanchez for 40m would have far more heat on it
To be fair, he played really well in Tobys place, first season, as he entered a beautifully balanced team.

Just lost his composure more and balance, plus the game shifted to playing out and press resistance, which amplifies his flaws.

Hope he gets a move and we get a new 3rd choice CB (better a CB who can truly challenge the other two).

Playing a game of chicken with Forest. Forest need funds from a Johnson sale and we won't entertain the idea of paying £50m. This will go the distance and as long nobody interferes it'll probably be done around £40m
So for only twice as much as he should be going for then? Surprised we are still using these negotiating methods but I guess they've borne fruit in the past...

...but not at a discounted rate.

So if Leicester didn't get relegated and we paid £80 million for Madison would that make him better?:ange-hmm:
I know what you are getting at though, and its hard not to agree that we seem to have to aim a bit lower and hope they come good rather than spending out big money on a sure thing, I wonder how much of this stems from signing the mega money duds like Ndombele and GLC?
I think just lately our scouting and signings (so far) have turned out a lot better, you only have to look to the likes of Bissouma, Udogie, Sarr, VDV etc and if Richie had turned out decent (he might still) then I think we would be very close to having a starting 11 equal to that when Poch was here in the early days. A couple more smart signings this window and we could really push on.
It's not just the fee, it's the wages. Johnson is more appealing at even £50m because he probably earns peanuts at Forest. (£30k a week)
People will all say waah waah waah, we could get X from Y for £30m but we'd have to pay X a lot more money making the package much bigger.

The thing with WHL is that being stuck at 36k with no modern amenities was going to become more of a drag on our operations by the year. We didn't necessarily have to tear down and build a billion pound jewel, but SOMETHING had to be done.

We chose the best option, IMO.

Not even price so much, but for the club that brought Ardiles and Villa to England, and Klinsmann and brought Lineker back from Barca (and Greaves back from Milan of course), there's something of the club's heritage in a headline-grabbing signing for a huge well known star.

That isn't necessarily the smartest way to do business today. I am more focused on filling out a squad. But I can appreciate the sentiment.

There was a benefit in our move for Edgar Davids back when, or even when Bale came back, that went beyond strictly their utility on the pitch.

I can definitely appreciate the sentiment too but I think people get way too bogged down in the idea that price has a correlation to footballing worth. It just doesn't in these modern times where prices and wages are completely skewed by clubs that are willing to pay stupid amounts of money for what amounts to a bit of PR and feel good factor.

I agree that I the past these types of signings have had us all buzzing but ultimately, obsessing over players price tags isn't healthy at all.

Because Ange wanted him so, so bad we wanted to make sure and leave the best for last...you know, because Ange wanted him as his priority target and so he felt special.

When Ange first got here, I hear the first thing he said was

"Daniel, get me Brennan Johnson. I don't care about anything else, I just want that lad. I've followed this lad ever since I was at Melbourne and he's got it in him to go all the way and be as good as Craig Bellamy."

I love Maddison. Great player. Great signing. Undoubtedly will outperform plenty of much more expensive signings and if he had longer on his contract would have been much more expensive.

I can meet you halfway and say he's a Marquee signing in that respect.

BUT.

we could have signed him at WHL.

Every Spurs fan knows that signings like Osihmen or Kvara aren't realistic because the club can't attract that type of talent. We couldn't in WHL and we still cant in the new stadium.

That type of talent is attracted by the chance to win trophies.

The stadium hasn't increased our chances of winning trophies.

Could we though?

I cant think of a purchase in the old WHL similar to him - 3/4th best creative mid in the league over the last few seasons.
