I mean it wasn't difficult to wikipedia how many goals Johnson scored last season and how many goals Nico Williams scored last season..

The reasoning of 'It's because he's better' is hardly backing up the point of why Nico Williams is a 'level' above Johnson...? When the most basic of stat proves that he isn't.

Brennan Johnson coring more goals than Williams proves nothing other than he scored more goals.

Quick glance at other stats shows that Williams is in a much higher percentile for chance creation, makes far more crosses, has a better cross success rate, assists every 600 minutes or so vs every 990 minutes, is in the 99th percentile for successful dribbles (!!) vs Johnson in 75th percentile, and weirdly enough also looks much better defensively .. if that's your thing.

None of which even means he's better. I haven't watched enough of him to say. But "Johnson scored more goals" isn't exactly compelling when it looks like Williams is being used as a more traditional ball carrier/creative wide player, which is generally what it seems like Ange wants.

Think we brought it down, by early exercise, to £42m odd. And, only about half NDombeles wages.

Awful value still, but not in the price range of Man City signings at that time, was all the point I was trying to make, he was top of tier 2 - how we have often shopped.
And just because I'm a nerd: Boris Johnson became PM a week before that transfer, crashing the pound to historic lows against the euro, though recovering a decent amount by the time we completed the transfer.

Exactly how the forex stuff was handled in that deal makes a not-insignificant difference. Multiple millions, potentially.

I would imagine we can count on Levy and Lewis to have played all of that to their advantage but who knows.

Yeah of fucking course we could have signed Maddison when we were in the old WHL under Poch. The only competition was Newcastle who have literally only just started their 'journey'.

But he hadnt posted the numbers yet to prove what he was about and I'm not sure would have been seen as a marquee signing at that time.

Maddison signed for Leicester the year after we moved out of WHL?

I'd love for us to get a 20+ goal scorer too, but there aren't that many around. Especially ones that can do it in the PL. So we will have to settle for the front 3 contributing maybe 30-35 goals, with the rest coming from MF and FBs. It's actually a better tactic, because it means the opposition can't focus on just one or two players. They have to worry about everyone.
So true, also thats the point of Angeball, unless I'm mistaken

Maddison moved to Leicester in June 2018, when Poch was manager.

Levy's always been keen on Maddison but despite us being linked it seems Poch not that keen - possibly because we still had Eriksen that time and Poch fixated upon getting Frenkie de Jong who turned us down to wait for Barcelona who he joined a year later in 2019

Another myth shot down !

The Rodrygo rumour won't go away :D :D

But now Spanish outlet Nacional (via Football365) claim that Tottenham have sent a bid of £86million ($110million) to Real Madrid in order to acquire the services of winger Rodrygo on a permanent basis.
Levy is waiting for the decimal point to go in, at 8.6m it's a deal.

What the fuck are you on about? I'm not debating whether or not Pochettino wanted him, I'm saying that its the type of signing we were capable of making pre new stadium.

They signed some unproven player from Lille, who'll probably end up being World class.

What's interesting is though is over the past few years they've had Bissouma or Mwepu or Caicedo, athletic players who were also gifted on the ball, monster engines.

They've lost that now. Bit flimsy in there with the likes of Gilmour. Don't think it'll be hard for teams to dominate them if they can keep resolute defensively.
Is Baleba the next Caicedo? I don’t know much about him

Yes we were capable of signing a young james Maddison who had just completed a loan move to Coventry playing 11 times for them.

Thats not the discussion.

The discussion is could we have bought James Maddison, 5th best creative midfielder in the prem, whilst at the old WHL

Yes. That's what I'm saying. Absolutely. 100%. Without doubt.

We were consistently in the top 4 for years pre new WHL and even challenged for the league. Maddison would've jumped at the chance to join us back then and we absolutely had the resources to land him still.

Our only competition for his signature was Newcastle. Everyone else had alternate options or already have creative mids.
