I sort of get this move for the type of player. Centre forward in Ange's team isn't expected to be heavily involved in the play, and is to concentrate on making short sharp bursts in and around the box and in behind to be on the end of stuff.
That is Werner, his game is mostly about movement and he has pace. If you look at the couple of chances Richarlison fluffed last night for instance, half the problem was that he couldn't run away from the defenders which made things much tougher. TW might be no more reliable a finisher, but I'd expect that if he is given a pass in behind they're not getting back at him.
On the flip side though, this is yet another "off the ball runner" type. Like Son. Like Johnson. Would be nice at some point to get a forward/winger who likes and can do something with the ball at his feet, with a game primarily about being able to dribble or go past somebody. And no, I don't count Gil or Solomon.
Really odd. If we were going for a restoration project, personally I’d much rather take a punt (and I know it would’ve been a gamble) on someone like Sancho or Ekitike. Loans with options for 6 months and we get wide players who can also dribble (Ekitike can also play 9).
What I would say is, from a scouting and analytics point of view, Werner is as close Son in profile as you could possibly find. Maybe that’s where this has come from.
