Of your list I'd say that Romero and Porro was in what I'd class as "backing the manager". In that yes they are expensive, but they're recognised excellent talents who could be just as likely to sign for other top teams in the prem.

Romero was Serie A defender of the year and porro was one of the most exciting wing backs in Europe.

The rest is outstanding scouting to identify opportunitistic good value purchases of talent that wasn't so widely recognised. This is just as important but you need both, and ultimately the acquisition of recognised talents is the difference between top 6 and winning the league or a cup.

Some examples of backing the manager at a critical moment at other clubs include:

Liverpool:
- Virgil van dijk
- Fabinho
- Alison
- Luis Diaz
- Firmino
- Jota
- Salah

Woolwich:
- Declan Rice
- Gabriel Jesus (big wages)
- Thomas Partey (as a player)
-Havertz
- Trossard
- potentially Ivan toney to come??

So Trossard - a 27m back-up player - is "backing he manager", but Biss 28m, Kulu 26m (+ loan fees), 40m Maddison, 50m Johnson, 40m VDV aren't?

60m for Ndombele, 60m Ricarlison, GLC 40m, Sanchez 40m aren't but 60m for crappy Havertz(*) is?

Maddison, VDV, Johnson were just "opportunism"????????

Nahhhh, balls to all that.

(*I'd rather Udoggie, Bentancur, Sarr, Vicario all in than blow 60m on that twat just cos he has name value.)

So good he didn't even get a single appearance for Nottingham Forest last season in a 6 month loan, only to then be loaned out to Sevilla and win the Europa League

:porrohands:
He was on loan from Rennes and then becomes an immediate starter for Seville. I think Nottingham Forest are the foolish ones in this scenario.

From Harry Kane to Timo Wermer .....

No I actually considered their 36.5 million outlay to be a premium. It was still expensive and was necessary to complete the pack.

It's near impossible to fill an entire squad with low profile under the radar signings before winning a league. Which is exactly our problem, we always have gaps in the squad.

Salah still had a world of doubters when he arrived at Liverpool. He wasn't some dead cert finished article... He'd already bombed in the EPL once.
