Transfers January Transfer Thread 2024

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

It’s definitely true that Conte didn’t get what he asked for which was always going to end in disaster. He asked for Bastoni and Levy gave him Lenglet. A manager like Conte was never going to swallow that.

Ange seems to be (like most modern managers) more willing to work with players who aren’t his ideal choice.
Lenglet who's only getting a handful of starts at Villa and club signing Spence who looks like being yet another complete dud of a club signing.

So you truly believe Werner is currently better than Richie.

Stop Bullshitting.

Do you think if they offered Ange, Werner or Toney, he'd choose Werner? It's not that we can't afford a 50 million STR, so why are you OK with someone who is a gamble?

This is classic Levy. We bought Gil because he was the next Lionel Messi.
Richie because he was the next Mo Salah,
Ndombele because he was the next Dembele,
Lo Celso because he was cheaper than Fernandes but equally good.
Djed Spence because he was the next England RB.

Wake Up stop being a puppet. We are getting a second rated player.
Yes, i think Ange would choose him over Toney tbf. He's got pace, that's how we play, high line....do you even know anything about our system?!!..😄....plus Toney's a bellend....🤷‍♂️

We’re never going to replace Kane. There isn’t another #9 like him in the world.

Son is probably the best possible replacement for Ange’s style. I struggle to think of a realistic target we can bring in.

How every transfer window works for every club on every forum...

Club is linked to Player x.

Poster 1:
"I don't want x, I want y."
"x is shit. y might be more expensive but is loads better."
"We always go for the cheap option. We should have paid the asking price for y on Day 1"

Club buys Player y after some negotiation. He underwhelms in his fist few games...

Poster 1:
"y is shit. We should have got x"
Poster 2:
"Why weren't we in for z?"
Poster 3:
"U21 player I have never seen play is better than all three"

Don't forget the trainspotter special "player X is a bell end" as if they actually know anything about the guy. Plenty of people on here wouldn't have signed Maddison because they had convinced themselves"he's a bell end."

It was a shit hire because it was never gonna work in the long term, at the time we both needed each other, the only way we benefitted was by keeping Kane interested for another couple of seasons but that's it.

Sometime a club also need stop-gap short term solutions. And in the case of hiring Conte it did work quite well for 1 season.
Did you say Conte was shit when Spurs qualified for the CL? Did you say Conte was shite when Spurs beat Woolwich 3-0 in that all-important game to qualify for the CL or when Son become (joint) EPL top scorer? Did you say Conte was shit when Spurs signed Bentancur, Kulu, Bissouma & Udogie (all bargains) and Porro due to him wanting them?
I was never thrilled by his footballing style and some of his rants and, yes, one got the feeling that Spurs was below his standards, etc…but Spurs really needed someone to tell L & L and the board some unpleasant truths about Spurs and the way they run the club and instill some anti-Spursy mentality. And I dare to say that he served that purpose well.
So even in retrospect I disagree that hiring him was “shit”. But it was time for him to go. And who were the other options back then anyway?
Besides, shit can be used as compost for new things can grow.

Against my usual instincts, I don't think Hercules is wrong.

IMO both Dragusin (and Werner) will be announced early next week - chances of today were always near zero with Modric the only player I can think of announced on a Sunday in recent(ish) times

Worth saying that Ben Davies and Emerson Royal have had a good run in the last 4 or 5 games as our CB's - probably looked as good as the majority of other CB's in PL. Rodrigo Bentancur's return playing as DM has also given our CB's a lot more cover, and must give the whole team a bit more confidence.

Good to hear that Van de Ven was training with first team for 3 days or so last week and has another week to go - I think he might have had one training session at Spurs before his debut - so it looks as if he's going to be back.

So whilst in late December I was thinking it was imperative to get a CB in early I'm a lot more relaxed now with Van de Ven back to pair with Dragusin, knowing that Royal is also available on the bench as a now experienced CB back up.
It is a great compliment to Emerson, that he has played RB, LB, CB this season and given everything, his initial newbie weaknesses at LB and CB in particular seems to diminish quickly, as he has a near perfect attitude., an utter trier.

The weakness chiefly with Emerson and Davies is set pieces, (hardly their fault, not being 6’2+ or having a unit alongside one or other) as also that is Vicarios weak spot, playing out is also not the best, but it’s worth noting, the same as at LB, that the angles and runs of players are all new to him in those positions (LB, CB) and his improvement curve at most things is really good.

As Ange said about facing adversity, now we know we have two very serviceable CB backups, hopefully Davies 4th Choice with Dragusin 3rd, Emerson 5th in emergency. Their experience now allows some minutes rest, should VDV have a game he sprints several times to protect his Hamstrings, or Romero gets a yellow and looks to have the red mist etc.

Why aren't they his ideal choice?

The fundamental difference between AP and Conte, where transfers are concerned is as follows;

AP: " I want a player who meets these various criteria."

Conte: "I want that player and that player alone."

One provides various options, the other none.

City will probably sign nobody

Woolwich might panic into overspending on Toney or Solanke but only if they get a mug to buy NKetiah

Liverpool will probably sign nobody

Villa, I think Emery said he expects outs more than ins.

Not sure what you expect to happen in January?
I expect us to take the opportunities we have to build our squad like Ange wants, then perhaps we'll have a bigger chance of qualifying for the CL and it gives us less to do in the summer.
